Food stamps is not enough to feed anyone for a month. That is why it is a "supplement" program. Go work in a food pantry the third week of the month when the food stamps have run out, I have. Many of the adults do without just so they can feed the kids most of the month.

I guess that would depend on how you spend them.

When my niece moved to my state she got a minimum wage job and with her and her three kids qualified for 600/month in FS. She always had "money" left on her card at the end of the month.

I also know of people who trade FS for cash.

According to the links in NBP's post the school assesses poverty of their students by those eligible for free or reduced lunch. According to the poverty threshold a family of four can make 31K and receive free or 44K and receive reduced. They also take into consideration the subset of kids in foster care and other programs. As well some communities are in a community eligibility program where every student gets free lunch/breakfast, as my kids school does. So according to that school there is a 100% poverty rate.

My word, the lack of critical reading skills in this thread is absolutely mind-boggling. The fines apply to schools enrolled in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) administered by the USDA, meaning they receive federal reimbursement to provide lunch to students. If a school lunch program is self-supporting, there is no issue. Our school lunch program is completely in-house; therefore, we set our own standards. You can do that if you pay your own way. If your school or district accepts federal reimbursement for school lunches, it must meet USDA standards. Shocking! Who'd have thought such a thing? And it's not President Obama or the First Lady who are levying the fines; it's the USDA, which has run the school lunch program since the very beginning, but nice try.

Government watchdogs trying to keep school lunches healthier for kids.

Not exactly. If they had actually backed out of the program, none of this would be an issue. Instead, these schools/districts tried to keep the federal reimbursement without abiding by the program's nutrition standards. That's a big no-no. Of course, the irony in all this is that the same people who have their knickers in a twist over the school lunch program standards would very happily limit the types of food available to people receiving SNAP.

Thanks for sharing.

Maybe you should avoid school cafeterias.

I guess liberal wackos don't care about local decisions by local people. This is one item (but not limited to this) the Feds need to stay out of. Vote conservative in November.

Easy fix. Just don't take federal funding for the school lunch programs and those schools can do whatever the hell they want. They can feed the children Cheetos and soda for lunch. Better?
