From the sociological definition, racism is prejudice combined with power. In terms of race, only white people are considered to have power in these interactions, and therefore people of color cannot be racist by default. In this viewpoint, the dominant white culture is imposing an "Asian people are all Bruce Lee" stereotype that other people of color emulate.
As if people of color need white people to come up with stereotypes about other people of color and can't do that very well on their own. Lol.
What was the point of this thread? What happened was clearly and unambiguously racist, and the OPD knows that. This stinks of a "blacks are the real racist "agenda post. Yes, random black guys on the street were racist, therefore black people as a whole have no right to complain about systematic, institutional racism. Is that the gist?
Well I didn't know whether to take it as racism or a compliment. There are obvious racial issues but at the same time being told we look like Bruce lee, is also a compliment.
I just stared at her and went along my business, asked my friend if that was racist and he said....dunno I take it as a compliment.
I don't know how old the woman was but i wouldn't take it too seriously if it didn't seem mean spirited.
And i don't know how old you are and if you're aware that, at least in the past (i believe beginning in the 1960's and maybe because of Bruce Lee), many people in the African American community (as well as in Jamaica and other Carribean islands but particularly Jamaica and i think because of the relatively large Asian population there) had a lot of respect / reverence for the martial arts and the Asian (Chinese) martial artists and Bruce Lee in particular.
Did it feel that she was being disrespectful / mean spirited and how did you feel.
Did it feel teasy and friendly?
The whole race thing has just gotten nutty imo. I realize that there are still many many racist people in the world and it's not good but i'm soooooooooooo sick of it ... so sick of the fact that people are still so ignorant as to think that any race is inferior.
I mean who am i to say as i'm "just" a white woman but to me, racism is holding the notion that a particular race of people is inferior based on race.
So much that people call racist is often just ignorance of a different culture or or just silly stuff .... like the black woman making that comment to you and your friend. Was she trying to demean you? Make you feel less than? Insult you? Or was she just being silly and having some fun? Or just being a jerk?
Me and my friend were walking down a street in New York City.
Some african american lady yells," Hey look it's Bruce Lee and his cousin."
P.S. And yes we are both asian males.
If you yelled at her, "Hey look, it is Beyonce and her cousin." she perhaps would feel flattered. Personally, I think Bruce Lee is a hottie, except he is a bit too short.
I think "intention" is everything. I don't know the intention of this lady, so hard to say.
