P.S. Here's a quote from the Service Member's Legal Defense Network, which provides the specifics of this law...
(source: http://www.sldn.org/templates/dont/record.html?section=42&record=749 (broken link))
" Don’t Tell. “A basis for discharge exists if . . . "the member has said that he or she is a homosexual or bisexual, or made some other statement that indicates a propensity or intent to engage in homosexual acts . . . .”
A service member may be investigated and administratively discharged if they:
1) make a statement that they are lesbian, gay or bisexual;
2) engage in physical contact with someone of the same sex for the purposes of sexual gratification; or
3) marry, or attempt to marry, someone of the same sex. "
If you subsitute these with heterosexual terms, do they still seem fair??
With talk of the draft comming back, should gays be drafted?
This topic is pointless. There is no chance that the DRAFT will come back! The American public would vote out of office any member of Congress that voted for it. All the politicians are worried about is getting re-elected and that goes for both Republicans and Democrats. I've worked on Capitol Hill for 20+ years and I've seen it day in and day out.
The subject of reinstituting the draft was brought up by Congressman Charles Rangel (D-NY) right before the elections. He claims it was to start a dialogue about (according to him) the military is primarily made up by under priviledged youths in America. He also said that he wouldn't vote for it.
My answer to the original question is yes, gays should be included in the "draft". That being said, I also believe women should also be included, but that's another topic for another day.
I just hope everyone realizes that that DRAFT is not coming back!
I have mixed feelings about a draft. I believe that some form of national service should be mandatory by all high school seniors not enrolling directly into college after graduation - or perhaps by all high school seniors regardless of college enrollment. However, my feelings about gay's serving in the military are quite strong. If homosexual's are "banned" from serving (and I don't need legal definitions on this - I am very familiar with DADT and the laws governing the UCMJ) then what would make them so special as to then qualify for a draft. If they aren't good enough now for the cause of freedom for this great nation - then they won't be good enough during a draft either. I would hate to see the law change just because there was a draft. That's BS. I think anyone who wants to serve should be allowed to serve if they are able - regardless of sexual orientation, etc. But don't change the rule because now all of a sudden you're in a bind.
Then there is the question about the folks that have been discharged already for homosexuality. What for them? Do they then become eligable for the draft too? They were kicked out once upon a time for being gay - but then a draft goes into effect and they are required to come back and serve. BS! They were ready, willing, and able to serve NOW - but you woulnd't have them. Now - you (the US Govt) is in a bind and you need those bodies back....You should have thought about that before you let those talented people go.
If they can hold a gun, then they should go along with everyone else if the draft happens. But who I REALLY think should be drafted are criminals (especially the ones in jail for violent crimes). You have so many young thugs out here who think they are so tough and have never been thru anything, put 'em out there and let's see how tough they really are.
I hate the idea of a draft, but if our country was threatened my gay friends would be there, but when they got back they would expect the same rights as everyone else that served.
Well, if declaring oneself to be gay continues to be reason enough to not be allowed into the military, and unjust wars based on lies continue to be fought, if the Draft is ever reinstated and they start drafting men up to the age of 45, I'll be the first on my knees reaching for the recruiters fly.
MoMark, that was great! Are you a writer in your real life? Because if you aren't, you should be! Your posts are always so visual. LOL!
I do like to have a little fun with visuals...lol, thanks for the comment!
