1. Taking something that isn't trending and saying it IS trending is deceptive.
2. "The news" is discovering what's going on in the world. If you don't think that's the definition of "news", we should probably wrap up our little chat here.
Well, yes. Reliable news cost money to produce. If you're not the one paying, you should probably ask yourself who is, and why.
A lot of people don't understand the multiple ways Facebook can make a profit without directly charging its users. It appears you're in that category. Hint: it's not just advertising revenue.
It's irrelevant anyway. Deception is deception whether you pay for it or not. Feel free to redefine the word all you want, but no one is biting.

I'll bite. Name one other than charging customers or advertising.
Data mining. It's quite profitable; I work for a company that does it for healthcare. Different goals, same principals.
Fair enough, although that's really in the realm of marketing and sales.

Don't mean to go off-topic with this, feel free to start a new thread on Facebook's business model.
The question on the table is still "did Facebook deceive people by calling non-trending news as trending news?"
Not to me they didn't as I never for an instant believed that trending nonsense in the first place. I expected it to be BS. And even if it were real, why would I care what tons of people have clicked on? I'm not a sheep; I'm a free thinker who follows stories that are of interest to ME. "Trending" is just another form of entertainment.
If you want to something legitimate to complain about, why don't you go after this popular news media tactic of grossly exaggerating a headline to get you to read a story that's basically inconsequential. Click-bait they call it. Even the major news agencies seem to use that tactic now. I personally think they should have their feet held to the fire over that BS. But those are news sources, not some stupid social media site that can't be taken seriously.
Ummmm... yeah I dumped Facebunk years ago seeing it was little more than a rich source of narcissistic supply for millions and a bastion of Leftism. I don't miss it one bit.

It definitely is. I was just responding to the myopic view some people have like "I have no right to complain because I'm not directly paying for something". I don't pay for NBC news, but I can get it for free over the air. Does that mean it's ok for NBC news to intentionally manipulate traffic reports? Of course not. It's just as dishonest for Facebook to take news that isn't trending and call it trending.

I have yet to meet someone that claims they're easily manipulated by news/commercials/etc. On the other hand, more than 50% of people think they have above-average intelligence. People tend to over-estimate their abilities.
Allowing bad information to circulate and hoping people aren't misled is bad practice IMO. That's how you get snafus like the anti-vaxxer movements.

Clickbait is annoying, no argument there.
I think you're missing the bigger issue here though: if news is entertainment now, where do we get our "real news"? Social media. If social media is compromised, then what?
Try to think of it in terms of news for everybody, not news for kdog or news for numberfive. Our last format of unfiltered news is eroding before our eyes, and that doesn't scare the bejesus out of you?
