OMG - what's the world coming to? The whole country could collapse because of this. How could any real man follow the orders of someone like him.
Next thing you know they will allow transgender people to use the bathroom in North Carolina and possibly the sun will go out as a result and it will turn out that the Westboro Baptist Church was right after all.
Meanwhile there have been like 56 people shot to death in Las Vegas so far this year and people in Venezuela are eating cats to avoid starvation. You know, like important stuff.
I know a person who joined the Marine Corps in 2000, he was then a straight man who was married to a woman. Several years later, we learned that he was actually a gay man. He is no longer in the Marine Corps, but he chose to keep his sexual orientation "private". I think it is a good decision.
I have nothing against gays and lesbians. I think their sexual preference is really none of my business. However, in an environment like the military, the "don't ask don't tell" rule is the golden rule (In my most humble opinion)
Eric Fanning, from what I read, seems qualified.
All these being said, The essential value at the heart of the military is willingness to defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. This should open to everybody who is willing to serve.
I don't think making the sexual orientation public is necessary, but this is just my opinion.
When my brother was serving in the Marine Corps, he knew a Marine whose family member was a member of the KKK, this Marine, however, was a good Marine. As long as people keep their political views private, I think they should be given equal opportunity to serve in the armed forces.
Anyway, a lean and mean all volunteer armed force protects a free country, this should always be the case. If he is qualified, he is qualified. If he chose to be "OPENLY" gay, that is his choice. Hope he doesn't play politics, but who knows?
It shouldn't be news, but he chose to be openly gay as if it was important.
