Doctors at Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey confirmed Tuesday the birth of a child suffering from Zika-linked microcephaly, a condition wherein the child's brain and head are partially developed.
The mother, who is 31 but whose name was not disclosed, contracted the Zika virus while in Honduras and was admitted to the emergency room at Hackensack on Friday while vacationing in the United States.
Doctors in Honduras suspected intracranial complications with the child in utero, but it was not until she was admitted to the high-risk unit at Hackensack University Medical Center that doctors confirmed the microcephaly diagnosis.
According to a report on NorthJersey.com, the woman was visiting from Honduras and has been in New Jersey for about a month.
Before coming to the United States, she was monitored by physicians in Honduras after her mother, a microbiologist, shipped a blood sample to the CDC in Atlanta to confirm she had contracted Zika, Alvarez said. She told doctors in Hackensack on Friday that “something is wrong with my baby’s brain,” Alvarez said.
I wonder what her bill will be... Ironically, it was reported the fetus had developmental issues right before she develop the rash... Is it truly even Zika-related?
I wonder why she didn't go to Canada or England for their superior healthcare system.
I don't think they have the anchor baby rule like we do.
I bet we're going to see a lot of this going forward. We'll get to take care of a disproportionate percentage of South and Central America's Zika babies. And of course their whole families will be able to come on up and live here too, because to do otherwise would be cruel and racist.
And this makes the baby a US citizen, that will be taken care of by taxpayers?
yes- what you going to do?
-but should we band sick/ infected people before travelling to the US? yes!- not sure it is on the list of known illnesses to stop them at the border yet -- it takes money and time to set up stuff - I am from Florida and we breed mosquitoes- and all kinds of bugs-- in fact think I was fighting a brown recluse - in my car this morning--- going to spray hope it dies- but--
we have asked for funding -even Tricky Ricky the gov. is begging -- but like global warming- they don't believe its true--
