In real life, the Northernmost counties (Del Norte, Siskiyou, Modoc, Humboldt, Trinity) are poor, as are the inland desert counties (no big surprise there). On the other hand, the decidedly southern counties of Ventura, Orange and San Diego are doing fair-to-middlin'.
Los Angeles County looks poor, but it's such an outlier, population-wise, that it's hardly a fair comparison. If it was broken up in SF-sized chunks, it would show up with some very rich and very poor areas.
No kidding, thank you, and many of these counties are not necessarily "poor" as much as they are rural/remote areas far from where the jobs are, and those areas are also part of what California has going for it as well, lots and lots of yet undeveloped open space that hopefully will be subject to better control against the sort of urban sprawl that has cost the Los Angeles basin dearly.
From the top north of California to the bottom south there are indeed all mixed areas both extreme levels of wealth to sad cases of poverty, and all in between. In fact, other than humidity and the bugs that go with humidity..., there is little that California doesn't have to offer no matter who you are; skier, surfer, hunter, fisherman, off-roader, boater, hiker, river rafter, actor, code writer, music, sports...
Eh, then why have so many of their residents left for Texas and now trying to turn that state into the mess they left?
I know lots of people who have left California as well, for Texas, Nevada, Oregon...
And almost always it is because they have been priced out or they are looking for where they can get a home for less money, regardless all the rest. I wish more would do so frankly, but ultimately many come back, because in the end the realization settles in, that there is a REASON real estate is pricier in California.
Simply put, it's a simple case of supply and DEMAND.
We are getting them in Missouri too, but fruitcakes don't do well here.
True that "fruitcakes" do typically prefer California, because the levels of diversity and tolerance in California are also better than lots of other places in the country where red neck types don't take too kindly to folks that don't look, talk and do like they do, by golly...
For First Time, Tax Revenue Has Recovered in Majority of States
State tax revenue has passed a milestone on the road to recovery. Adjusted for inflation, tax receipts in 29 states had bounced back by the second quarter of 2015 from drops during the Great Recession. This is the first time recovery has widened to a majority of states.
50 States 5.6% improvement. California 14.4% improvement.
And of course there are many ways to measure "success" well beyond the imagination of those who think more singularly, but I surely don't want to get into another round of dizzying repetition, so please have mercy!
"California is one of the few states in the country, and easily the largest, where Democrats are completely in control, holding every statewide office as well as overwhelming majorities in the Assembly and the Senate, not to mention both United States Senate seats. Mr. Brown and his party are using that power to try to enact legislation — on guns, tobacco, the environment, the minimum wage and immigrant rights — that suggest the kind of agenda that has eluded national Democrats."
"The Democrats’ more recent success in the state is in part the result of good fortune. California has been going through a period of prosperity, and in recent years Mr. Brown has been spared the need to impose politically contentious spending cuts."
Yes, they are a very wealthy state, but the problem is, and you failed to mention it, is that 27% of the population, about 9 million people, are struggling in the state. If you're going to tout the good stuff, you need to talk about the bad stuff. Nine million people in ONE state is a LOT of people NOT doing well. For them, CA doesn't feel prosperous at. all.
How about the dirt poor to the east, south, and north of the coastal cities. Does everything need to be spelled out for you?
