Many, if not most, white Americans have no particular ethnic identity, so what alternative is there for them? For me, though, "white pride" is pointless. Ethnic identity totally supersedes white identity for me.
Southern identity can be a kind of ethnic identity, but it seems the student in question was probably not a Southerner.
Really? What kind of ethnic identity is southern? I do not understand southern heritage or southern pride, what it represents. US south is just a region like the north or west, it was agricultural and thrived on the back of slaves. There was a failed secession and that flag that didn't last but a few years and a lost war.
How about northern pride? Western pride? Upper Midwest on the east side of the river pride?
However, if there can be a black pride identity it is only fair to open that up to other races. White pride has nothing to do with southern anything. Whitest places in US are in the northeast. Vermont white pride, go Bernie.

That question would be better answered by a Southerner. The idea is not so outlandish, and a cursory Google search yields several results.
This might be of interest.
(The following is a testimony from Dr. Clyde Wilson, a history professor at the University of South Carolina. It was written as an explanation of Southerners as a separate ethnic group for a legal case in South Carolina concerning discrimination at school against a student for wearing a shirt that had a battle flag on it.)
It starts out with the human nature, of resisting the bully.
It has turned into resentment, from being raised to be a victim of ones own identity for generations.
Resisting the bully to resenting the bully? WTH does that even mean? Do tell, what is RESISTING the bully? Nice to see that you admit he is indeed a bully.
He is in no shape, form, or fashion a bully. The definition of a bully is "use superior strength or influence to intimidate (someone), typically to force him or her to do what one wants." A couple of synonyms for bully is persecute and oppress. Where did the teen intimidate or force anyone else to do anything? He didn't. He made a statement. Making a statement is not bullying.
By denying him his right to free speech, the school system and anyone else involved oppressed the teen. Therefore, the "bully" you refer to would be the school.

Southern Pride is a real thing. We have a culture that is much different than the West, Midwest, Upper-Midwest, or the North. And Southern Pride has nothing to do with race. It's about being proud of where we are from, and proud of the ideals and the values we were raised with.
Southerners are often made light of on TV, radio, on the internet, etc... for being backwoods, uneducated rednecks. This couldn't be further from the truth. We pride ourselves on our culture of friendliness, helpfulness, hospitality, and equality (despite what many think from watching too much TV and despite the few that really are uneducated and still hang on to racism, but again this happens everywhere).
It's difficult to explain and is more of an experience that you would need to have to understand how it really is here.
Regrettable lack of creativity. Why not unfurl a white flag in commemoration of the Confederate surrender?
You mean the same lack of creativity that allows the Malcolm X flag, or the black power flag to be worn openly in public? You do know that not only did the Confederacy use this flag, the US Navy has flown it on their ships during wartime in different parts of history?

The other regions of the US have their own cultures and history too. The south is not special in that regard.
The Confederate flag was never a "symbol of hate" until the Looney left demanded that it become one.
I thought it was the symbol of ignorant white trash.
