Or you could say his motivation was a cleansing in the name of his religion. So very much in the name of Islam.

Idea: Since this conflict within me is driving me crazy (not to mention other inbalances present) I'm going to go on this rampage in the name of Islam (911 call pledging allegiance to Isis) to rid myself of the "gay within me" and be a good Muslim. He also probably figured he would die.
Just a theory. If they would have took him alive I bet the shrinks would still have trouble getting to the bottom of this one.
this is classic. he probably didn't even give a darn about ISIS and used that to deflect from anyone catching on to the fact that he was a gay Muslim who was obviously rejected by many men and couldn't handle it.

The 911 call in the midst of it all to claim his support for ISIS may have, as you say, been a cover up for his own fondness of men.
Maybe he wanted to met up with gays to kil them but decided to kill a bunch of them at one time. He could have relished the day to kill them. They are taught taqiyya, to befriend the enemy , treat them nicely, only plotting their demise. This is how Mohammad conquered .make friends then kill them.
There are several Muslim majority countries where being gay is legal and socially acceptable in large cities.
There are several Christian majority countries where being gay is illegal. Men are stoned and women are raped " to show them what they are missing".
um, yeah I don't think any Islamic nation accepts openly gay men. maybe some day.
Turkey who claims to be secular (cough) is increasingly becoming more Islamic by the day with their leader saying just last week that women who have careers and don't have children are denying their femininity.
