We should always be cautious who is allow to enter the United States as a tourist or as an immigrant. We should also be cautious who we allow to own guns. And we should continue to look at the types of weapons Americans are allowed to purchase and own. Your thread title insinuates that this tragedy was caused by an outsider, non-American, but it wasn't.
This Omar Mateen dude who murdered those 50 people in Florida IS "Muslim" and; that's possible trouble right there, I'm sorry to say. Even the man's own father is sick over what his kid did.
Every time something like this comes down in the US; that'll push more and more people to vote for Trump over Hillary even tho he's a bit of a jerk.
What this does, even though this "terrorist" was born and raised in the US, is bring to light the beliefs of Muslims. It isn't like we haven't seen what the Muslim refugees have done in other countries:

Can you blame people when, in light of such events, they gravitate away from someone who responds by kissing Muslims' asses and towards someone who is honest about the problem and comes off as a strong leader?

That is not the reason they pander to Islam. They (leftists) view situations as oppressor vs. oppressed and side with the oppressed against the oppressor. That's why they hate America.
They see Muslims as oppressed and Israelis as oppressors. That's all it is.
