At the time of purchase he was a US citizen with no criminal record. While it sucks, that's freedom. I still won't trade freedom for a government oppressive enough to keep me safe.
More extensive background checks and stringent criteria for gun ownership are needed.
Assault weapons are unnecessary for hunting and home protection.
Our gun laws must be reformed.
Period.
An individuals right to home defense was only part of the reason for the 2nd amendment, and it certainly was not written because "the deer were coming".
You realize that the purchase of guns was the most vital step in the processes that Omar went through to ultimately shoot over 100 people, don't you? Access of a gun is required to use a gun for mass shootings, isn't it?
How many people would Omar have shot if he did not buy a gun?
Funny how the thousands of other guns purchased that same week weren't a step down the same path.
By your logic, the purchase of a car is the first step down the path of DWI deaths. We license the driving of cars. We regulate who uses them. We make people take tests before legally using them. What's the end result? Each day 27 people are killed in DWI crashes in the US. Since all the restrictions placed on driving a car haven't stopped this slaughter, do you believe we need to ban cars?

The semi-automatic Colt 1911 began mass production in 1911. The ease of manufacturing has come a long way over the last 100+ years.
Make guns illegal and there will be thousands of little manufacturers popping up across the US making illegal guns. That's just a fact. It's not much different than the thousands of people making meth.
I call BULL on this entire nonsense endeavor. You're telling me that someone can churn out handguns & rifles that cost $200 - $500/ea, and there isn't a market for that?
Someone out there with the right equipment, can make 3 $200 handguns/day @ $4,200/wk, $218K/year and FROM THEIR GARAGE and it isn't happening?
The ease of making homebrews is why microbreweries & distilleries have sprouted all the country, and yet there's no microgunsmith industry in this country? Really?
What exactly is stopping some enterprising machinist from making just 1 gun a day, and earning $70k/year on the side?
