A little note on unemployment in Denmark, kind of sounds like slave labor to me.

Which are the best countries in the world to live in if you are unemployed or disabled? | Politics | The Guardian

Quote:
Those out of work can receive unemployment benefit for two years – the same as Finland and Denmark – after which they are moved on to a “social assistance” scheme for people outside the labour market. Claimants have been told to sell their cars and other assets before they can get any benefits. Municipalities can also require non-specific “activity” from recipients, which might include gardening or cleaning the streets.

But, if you do not visit other countries you will never get a clear picture. You need to go to Germany and the Netherlands and talk to those folks and see how they live.

Many of us (Americans) have this false concept that life is hell everywhere except the USA. It is hard to imagine that workers in other countries have it better than we do.

Well maybe we should mandate that people travel to Germany and the Netherlands right after we force companies to pay them 30 days of vacation.

Sadly an advanced society requires law and regulations.

Yes, you definitely need to travel there and talk to working class folks there.

Or maybe big business leaning Republicans should admit that we're not exceptional and cannot offer our citizens what many other Western democracies can.

Regarding taxes, taxes in Denmark are invested in quality of life. A foreign concept. Not on bailouts to fat cats and the donor class. Taxes mean people dont pay any money for a university education, health insurance, retirement savings, child care, disability and unemployment insurance is top notch, much better public transit etc etc. In other words, taxes in Denmark actually substantially reduces financial insecurity for workers.
"OECD data for 2014 indicated Denmark had the highest percentage of personal debt based on percentage of disposable income"

By the way, the price of the Big Mac is before sales tax. Guess what the sales tax rate is over in Denmark?

More than half of their GDP is derived from taxes. Nice model.

Been there plenty of times. Lived there for a year in my twenties. I've travelled to numerous counties in Europe and Asia, South America, and Australia. Africa is the only continent I haven't explored other than Antarctica.

In Europe I preferred Spain as it was laid back. In Asia I really enjoyed Japan. China was interesting and they have some amazing natural beauty outside the big cities. Eastern Europe was dirty when I was there but I understand it's much cleaner. Australia was like Southern California. The chaps in the UK never let us buy a beer which is why when I run across tourists from the UK I always buy them a pint.

We purchased a house in Santa Fe, NM, however, and in some respects it's like visiting another country. No passport required. Santa Fe isn't bad. It's just far different than Northern California.

Its not before VAT tax. Its included.

Denmark is ranked as the happiest country in the world and has a much higher human development than the US. Taxes are used to invest in the quality of life of its people. People believe taxes should be spent on quality of life, not gifts to the donor class in the form of bailouts, corporate welfare, no-bid government contracts etc. Its a very alien concept.
