If they want to act like hippies then treat them like hippies. Get out the billy clubs and tear gas, time to clean them out of there.

The truth is that more guns amongst the general populace will not make this society safer; they will make it more dangerous. You may have a better chance of people at the bar or school having a firearm and using it to dispatch an attacker, but it will be far outweighed by the sheer quantitative factor of more people from all backgrounds with easy access to firearms walking around everywhere with loaded weapons. It just won't work the way it's advertised.

Living with constant fear and acceptance of death of our young people in schools and such for the sake of some obtuse allegiance to a very outmoded, fanatical reading of the Second Amendment is a fairly stupid tradeoff to make, but that's where we are.
Yaaaawn, I'm sorry, did you say something about common sense?

Just a continuation of the Drama Queens in Washington creating a meaningless disturbance they mistakenly believe convinces the public they're actually doing something useful, what's become the norm on both sides of the aisle.

I think Republicans are miscalculating on this issue. Many people (though apparently not posters on C-D) remember three years ago, when the Republicans pitched a hissy fit and shut the government down, costing us billions over their inability to defund the Affordable Care Act. So when representatives pull an all-nighter to draw attention and show people that they're committed to fighting for a cause that many people care about- and one that is viewed as a public health threat, I'll give them credit for actually caring and working on an issue that real people and not lobbyists promising the moon.

I'd also suggest that reasonable gun owners separate themselves from the lunatics and start contributing to the conversation-and act like they care about mass shootings, instead of sounding like they side more with the perpetrators than the victims of gun violence. Because at some point down the road there will be sea change legislation if they don't even allow an conversation about the topic and minor, common sense legislation, among other things.

Would this stop the next shooter? Probably not. But they're natural steps towards reducing the chance of occurrences from happening. With approval ratings above 85% from people on both parties and even the reality TV star pretending to be a Republican candidate in agreement on the issue, acting tone deaf about legitimate concerns is probably not a good idea. Internet tough guys making fun of the party for protesting is one thing, but senators and congressman minimizing the public's concerns won't play well in November. If it doesn't happen this election, it's coming, regardless. And my prediction is that it will be women that mobilize to vote and ultimately bring about change.

Well, the point is that while they are talking about guns, they really aren't. They are talking about removing rights without due process of law.

That's what the issue here is.

Oh, really? Do you ever go on commercial flights? Are you mad about the idea of the existence of the no-fly list? Why is it that no one's complaining about rules and restrictions on planes? The proposals have an appeal process in place for those on the list, BTW. And what's your problem with universal background checks?

Last week, conservatives tried to say that the FBI didn't do their job, but this week they're saying that even if the FBI was relentlessly on the murderer's trail, nothing should prevent him from being able to purchase firearms. Do you see a disconnect there?

I also find it ironic that the same people against restricting gun sales to suspected terrorists are simultaneously fine with throwing rules and rights out the door and propose anything from internment camps to torturing suspects or potentially violating rights of people of a certain religion or ethnicity.

I'm fine with guns but we have far too many people that think they're own warped interpretation of the 2nd Amendment is the only or paramount right to our existence. We can and do have some rules in place to ownership and use, for good reason.

Are it-ins?

Apples and oranges.
