Laws on the books are intended to allow sentencing in line with the offense, and though I'm no legal expert, I suspect putting a gun to someones head to mug them comes with a serious penalty even if first offense. That a second offense is likely to bring an even more severe penalty for any type of offense, does NOT mean "leniency" either way. I am in favor of the appropriate sentence for the crime all circumstances properly considered.

Aren't we all?!?
The FBI disputes your view.
71% of arrested violent criminals are repeat offenders. Our system lets them plea bargain down to misdemeanors in many cases in the name of expediting cases.
There are thugs with long rap sheets out there creating more victims. We need to stop this if we are serious about reducing violent crime stats.

And this is one of the many issues that needs to be addressed. And this is why I blame the left for not really doing anything. They had a "sit in" , for a new firearms bill that wouldn't do a damn thing. And they wonder why the GOP won't budge, had they started addressing the real issues maybe it would go somewhere.

No need for these basic lessons about "simply owning a certain type of gun," please. Surely you can do better...

Again, my position is as pretty well reflected in the article that begins this thread. These straw man arguments I am constantly presented regardless are exactly what makes a "sensible" and/or "honest" discussion about these problems altogether impossible.
No

You're asking if we should do away with laws for things that are already illegal like murder is the straw man argument.

My pointing out your "all or nothing" ridiculousness is not a straw man.

They seemed to be intact families. I worked there a lot and for the most part they were good customers. That town is shrinking though. It has lost almost 5,000 people in the last 40 years. I belong to the club over there that has a gun range and I seldom see any black people at the range.

Well, intact families play a role in keeping violent crime down. That and a sense of community.

Funny you mention the gun range. I'm Black, I live in metro Atlanta. I went to a gun range in Marietta,GA, a suburb that is around 30% Black. There were no other Blacks at that gun range but me. I went with a friend who was teaching me how to shoot a pistol.
