The fact remains Christianity went through a reformation and became peaceful, Islam went through a reformation (called Wahhabism) and became more violent.
The difference lies in their founders; Jesus and Muhammad, one is a hippy, the other a terrorist.
Yes, Islam needs a reformation. The Christians did it despite their holy book saying they shouldn't. The Jews did it and their holy book also says not to change it. Given that Islam is from the same general region of the world as these other two, I see no reason to believe that Islam isn't capable of it too.
And luckily, their are Muslim reformers. However, few people are giving them the credit they deserve. Too many conservative don't want to compromise their 'Islam is bad' narrative by giving airtime to those people, and too many liberals are too afraid to be critical of Islam as a whole enough to give validity to the reformers. So you don't see enough of those people on CNN, or Fox or MSNBC. Instead of days upon days of coverage on a terrorist attack, maybe days and days of hearing what Muslim reformers are up to will actually help us in our ideological conflict against radical Islam by making fewer people prone to radicalization.
And what I'm saying is those of us who are too liberal or conservative on this need to swallow our ****ty pride and do something good for a change.
I believe if Muslims worldwide took a stand against any and all strict forms of Islam, it would help curb terrorism.
replace sharia law with a women's rights movement. replace honor killings with building more schools and lifting literacy rates. replace vitriolic hatred, self-victimization and punishment with sermons of EQUALITY for all.
in many Islamic countries, the most violent form of Islam is being taught in parallel with a huge uptick in terrorism.
They would have no credibility w/i the muslim world. That would be like punters and kickers lobbying for the NFL to play flag football.
What I'd like to know is how did Islam in many countries decades past go from modern moderate with women wearing no head covering to today's Islam with followers becoming more radical, angry, and women dressed fully covered either out of devotion to faith or fear of those men who'll punish them with violence or death? How does a culture/religion devolve several centuries in a matter of a few decades?
