I have noticed the huge difference between police defenders, and people like me who despise the idea of the government having a monopoly on authority and violence.

I have actually lived in the projects, was raised them back in the 80s. I have seen first hand how much of a failure the police are. And today in high crime areas, you can almost always link it to police neglect. Police don't actually stop criminals. What happens when a criminal robs you home, and you live in the projects? They tell you to file a police report, it goes into some file, never to be looked at again. What happens when you get robbed? Police will blame you and say "well you shouldn't have been walking around this area at night".

Growing up it was always a given that police sucked. When I worked for the government, and worked closely with the police, I saw the same ol stuff. Police basically protecting the rich, and crapping on the poor. Tons of police response in low crime neighborhoods, but almost zero in high crime neighborhoods.

Police generate revenue for the city or state. And you really don't make the city or state any money when you waste your time going after gang members. If you don't have any drugs you can steal from people in the community, then they're not even worth your time trying to pursue. And that's the real police for you. Police don't care about stopping crime. They just care about stealing drugs from people, blaming victims of crime, and bullying people "just to look busy".

So I'll issue you a challenge. Why don't you actually take some money, rent a spot in a low income, high crime neighborhood. And then evaluate how "great" of a job police are doing. You game?

Too many police in high crime area~ "they picking on us"
Too little~ "they don't care"
Mostly they are looking for easy money, traffic violations.

Just remember just as blacks get tired of being "lumped together" with criminals, and how it is a huge error in logic to blame ALL blacks for the action of a few, in the same way it is absurd to paint all police officers with the same broad brush because of the actions of a few.

The system of government itself is bad. Can you prove that the system of blackness is bad? This argument of course is used constantly, and it's flawed

I don't think the government should have a monopoly on violence, assuming that the people are using the violence for legitimate reasons, such as self defense.

But I will always support the police. Because they are the ones risking their lives to defend us. I understand it because I too put my life in danger to defend America, on US Navy submarines.

Certainly not. The United States of America has survived as a democratic Republic for over 200 years. We are the oldest democracy in the world. We are far from perfect, but we get better with each generation.

I have. The combination of high crime rates, the likelihood of violence when the police come in, shortages of cops which leads to over working them and over taxing them coupled with little in the way of protective gear, not enough time to de-stress because there aren't enough cops, being viewed by negatively by the public, etc, etc, etc,..... leads to serious issues. I once called 911 because I was being threatened by a neighbor with a bat (he was sure we broke into his house because it was broken into on the side that faced ours) and the police responded THREE DAYS LATER. BTDT and moved. I do feel for the police in high crime areas. I can't imagine the stress they face every day and then to be vilified by the public to have every action scrutinized....It's a miracle anyone becomes a cop these days and no surprise that Detroit is having trouble recruiting officers which only exasperates the situation. It's a vicious cycle. The more stress you place on cops, the less support you gives cops, the more you over work cops, when they are not given time to de-stress after being in violent situations, the more we will see shootings when we as civilians who do not face what the cops face every day and probably dream about at night think were unwarranted. We have gotten what we asked for.

We need more cops, better trained cops, better protective equipment for cops, better mental health care for cops and to respect cops. Unfortunately, I don't see any of this happening any time soon. In fact I think it's going to get worse with fewer and fewer people going into law enforcement because of how we view cops which means the cops we have will be even more stressed...

I'm glad I moved. I honestly see rioting in the city before any of this changes. If I still lived in a large city with a high crime rate I'd be very scared right now. If I were a cop in a city with a high crime rate I'd be doubly scared right now and fear leads to over reacting. We have a very bad situation right now.

WRT the rich/poor thing. I grew up poor but I was taught to respect the police. If an officer called me I did not run. I stopped and treated him with respect. Because we didn't run no guns came out. I was taught to view the police as help. This isn't a rich/poor thing. It's a respect/disrespect for cops thing. I grew up in a poor white neighborhood. Yes we had our issues but no gangs and little violence.

I lived in a community in Charlotte that became a high crime area while we were living there. I had a neighbor tell us the police refused to come into our neighborhood on Halloween. Our neighborhood was too dangerous that day. I have spent the night on my sofa with a shotgun in my hand to protect my children while my husband ran a computer call over in West Charlotte at a hotel at 2 A. M. I have had someone try to break down my door and the police were there in minutes. We have had something written on our black painted door that to this day my husband will not tell me what it said. My daughter was threatened by a fellow student that caused the teacher to keep him for a few minutes so she could run home fast. Since that day I escorted her to school. The next year she was in the Myers Park Traditional School and I had to drive her there every day. Three black girls up the street ganged up on my daughter and tried to beat her up and the mother of those girls did nothing to help her. She had gone to their home to play and luckily I saw what was going on and rescued her. Yes, you get away from people like that when you can and we did.

The police are still my friends. Some of them are my personal friends and my step-grandson is a policeman and his daughter is having a baby and the father of that baby is black. She is my step great granddaughter and I love her and I will love this first great great grandchild. I think it is going to be a girl. And I have no thought that this child will be treated any worse because of whatever skin color it turns out to be. If it looks like its mom it will be beautiful. Dad doesn't look bad either.

Maybe one should ask themselves why the neighborhood was so safe when it was white and so dangerous when blacks moved in?? Your neighborhood is what you make it. I am not going to watch drug dealing on the corner and not report it. I had never met a black person when I finished high school. I will always be nice to everybody but judging from my experiences as a grownup living in an area that has many black people, I do not go out of my way to make friends with black people because I have found most of them to be prejudiced against white people and I have no white guilt that makes me want to deal with that unless it is necessary. I treat everyone with respect but I reserve the right to choose whom I want to socialize with in my private life. Start talking about how you have been wronged as a black person and I am out of here. You haven't been wronged any more than anyone else.

Philly PD probably has the hardest job in the country. There are some bad ones, but for the most part they are good. I honestly think part of the problem is the Union makes it diffcult to get rid of the bad ones.

How about people take personal responsibility and attack the core of the problem....crime???

How about a better challenge? Get a few people together and police the area yourselves?? I know it wouldn't be easy, but community watches can be very successful.
