I agree, but a lot of people don't. When many people hear that criminals can take college classes in prison, there is outrage. If they don't have that, though, how can you not expect recidivism?

Honestly, I don't believe I've ever heard outrage about continuing education in prison. I believe prisoners should receive training in various trades. It reduces the odds of reoffending. However, I also believe they should be doing hard labor as well.

You should talk to a bunch of my students - - many are furious with the idea that people who have done the wrong thing will get a free education that they are paying thousands for. Every semester, I get a few papers from that point of view.

Nothing should be free in prison!

What subject do you teach and how old are these students? Curious to understand the context.

That's part of their argument. But if you don't give something for rehabilitation, what are they going to do? Push-ups and talk to other career criminals.

College freshmen (for that particular class). It's a rhetoric and composition class. For two of the assignments, they get to pick whatever they want to write about (truly carte blanche) , but it has to be argumentative in structure.

That could be one part of it. Alot of criminals don't know how to get money outside of crime. If one goes to prison, 3 free meals and a bed. Profit from crime? Great. Get caught? Free meals and free bed.

I've never heard that term. I thought it had something to do with Microsoft Windows. Like installing patches and updates to what is basically an inferior operating system at its core.
