I honestly do not understand why so many people find far-left ideas appealing. As I indicated previously, the only explanation as to why I think that such ideas are making a comeback is that many of Sanders' voters were not alive when the Soviet Union was around.
It is gaining popularity because the current system has delivered a crappy economy with few jobs, stagnant wages (for at least 15 years), massive student debt, and racial unrest. It does not help that the government leaders (whether republican or democrat) only serve the DONOR class.

Only Right Wingers think Bernie Sanders is a "radical socialist".

The reality is that pretty much all of the Right's economic policies of the last thirty years have been revealed as utter failures that only benefited the wealthy and impoverished many. Cutting income taxes, especially on the wealthy, has not increased revenues or produced all that more investment as promised despite huge corporate profits. What has cutting capital gains taxes produced for society? Eliminating regulations on financial institutions nearly led to economic collapse in 2008. Cutting tax support for public universities and financial aid has resulted in soaring student loan debt. Cutting wages and benefits in the name of "remaining competitive" has resulted in the middle class shrinking about 30% between 1980 and 2016. Meanwhile, the wealth gap has soared.

Time to try something different.

Whether we wear the costume of crony-capitalists or communists, our puppet government serves only the interests of the Central Banking Families. The drooling slaves will fight amongst each other instead of their true enemies, the puppet State and the International Money Cartel.

everyone in these days should praise re-distribution from the rich to the poor and lower classes
if done, USA would really become great again, as it was untill the 1970s when the rich weren't outrageisly richt

and the same is here in Europe, it's the same story

Socialism, but hardly radical socialism, has finally been noticed as the way to level the playing field in our economy and restore working and middle class prosperity.

Many fail to realize that even if we radically increase taxes on the very wealthy they will remain very wealthy. $100,000 is a good middle class annual income but is only half the cost of a new Bentley to the Donald and his friends as well as being less then one day's income.

"Socialism" will do nothing to those who have concentrated virtually all of the wealth for themselves. The Central Banking Families have been able to do so because of legalized fiat currency, usury, and partial reserve "banking". It has nothing to do with free markets, as we have a highly regulated economy where the government extorts from, regulates, and interferes with every human transaction. The "money" scams are at the heart of the confiscation of wealth, not the government controlled market. (Although government regulations and "laws" do serve the interests of big business and the fictional entities we call "corporations"...)

How realistic are Bernie's proposals for solving much of that?

I haven't heard much interest in RADICAL socialism. I haven't heard much interest in Soviet-style socialism.

Bernie favors something more like democratic socialism. Since the majority of the world's developed nations have adopted this model, including most of Western Europe, it can hardly be labeled radical. In many ways, this model has been quite successful. In other ways, not so much.

“Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote.”

“When the people find that they can vote themselves (other people's) money, that will herald the end of the republic (and society).”

Oh, I thought you were referring to radical fascism.

Never mind, just another misguided Socialism=Democratic Socialism=Communism screed. Carry on.
