About 100 African migrants are sitting in a big rubber dinghy in the Mediterranean waiting to be found by "rescuers" and ferried to Italy. Suddenly one of the tanks springs a leak and fuel starts pouring into the bottom of the boat. People panic and rush around for a while but then, realizing that the boat isn't sinking, they settle down and continue waiting. A few hours later they are found and picked up by the MSF. The men look dazed but unhurt as they board the rescue boat. Tragedy has been averted and they look forward to their new life in Europe. There's only one problem; every woman on the boat is dead.

Imagine a rubber raft with 100 Europeans being found adrift in the Mediterranean with all the men alive, standing calmly around the outside, and all the women dead, lying in a shallow pool of fuel and water in the middle of the boat. Every journalist in the world would be asking why - how could this possibly happen? But in this case nobody is asking.

It would have been good to have autopsy results. The conclusion that the women "suffocated" does not seem to have been based on autopsies, and it didn't sound like any were going to be performed.

People do whatever they can to survive...even with the cost of sacrificing others.

You forgot to give us the punchline to the joke.

If anything like this happened with a boat full of Europeans or Americans there would be extreme criticism of the surviving men for letting all the women die and not helping them.

Of course.

I don't even know why Italy just has to rescue those migrants.

Can't Italy just send them back or home or something? Or is it considered too RACIST if Italy did that?

Maybe some cultures have progressed to where the "women and children first" policy is sooooo 20th century, Western and backwards.

According to the survivors interviewed in that piece the women were sitting in the middle of the boat, and when the fuel started leaking in, the men panicked and rushed around trampling them.

Yes, that's the point here. For people who think men protecting women and children, and sacrificing themselves for them in times of disaster is a universal value - here's proof that you're wrong. These are Western ideals and they'll disappear with the West.
