[quote]An Oregon teenager could be sentenced to a year in prison for possessing about one gram of marijuana in a federal case that has sparked widespread outrage about the ongoing “war on drugs” – even in US states that have fully legalized cannabis.

Devontre Thomas, a Native American 19-year-old, is accused of possessing a small amount of weed – enough for about one joint – and will face a federal trial that advocates say is a waste of resources and a stark reminder that US law enforcement agencies continue to target people of color for low-level pot offenses.

I look forward to seeing how they justify this, how they justify the use of taxpayer dollars, and how they justify a victimless crime as a crime that should create revenue for the state.

Sounds like the most dangerous part of cannabis is getting caught with it. Cannabis won't ruin your life, but getting caught with it WILL. Anyone who would send someone to jail/prison for a gram of cannabis IS the criminal.

Default Teen Faces A Year In Prison For Possessing ONE Gram of Cannabis

He does not face a year in prison. That's the maximum possible sentence which, given the fact the pot is legal now in Oregon, he will certainly not receive. He may not be penalized at all.

He didn't get off. He was correctly convicted of sexual assault and sentenced to 6 months in jail.

I'd like to propose something that might be far fetched. Or maybe not.

On a couple of occasions this year, the DEA has made noises about rescheduling cannabis. I got the impression that maybe they would like to get that done before Obama leaves office. The Obama administration might even be pressuring them to get it done before he leaves.

So what better way to ensure the maximum amount of public support than to insanely prosecute a ridiculous case? People will see how wasteful, useless, and draconian it is, and demand the DEA to reschedule it.

Am I insane for even considering that as a possibility?

There's surely other recent insane cases to go on.

Yes, but this one has it all. A minority teenage victim, caught with only a gram, and the age of the case makes it seem even more of a senseless waste of resources. I think it is a perfect choice, if they indeed have this hidden agenda.

The more I think about it, the more it make sense, just because of the sheer amount of insanity involved if they really are doing this just to be hard-assed about it.

One can't possess MJ on school grounds it is considered a federal crime......Idaho has the same law, people don't go to jail. That is the maximum for small amounts. Most likely he will have to pay a $500 fine and 50 hours community service.

Don't take pot onto federal land and your chances of being busted are reduced, certainly not school grounds.

As for the rapes, why are native Americans having these issues? The statement below, why are native Americans not taking care of this for themselves...... First they want government out of the way and in the same breathe complain about it. Cultures and their complaints.........when will it stop?

“There are major crimes that occur in Indian country where the federal government has jurisdiction, and they fail to investigate, and they fail to prosecute,” he said.

In recent years, there has been growing outrage about how the government responds to sexual assaults and rapes that occur on Native American reservations.

This below; Could it be more whites live in Oregon than blacks ratio is a factor......Liberals never consider this!
Historically, black residents in Oregon have been roughly twice as likely to be cited or arrested for marijuana as white people, according to the ACLU. Civil rights advocates across the US have increasingly raised concerns about the ways in which the booming marijuana economy has excluded people of color, particularly those who have suffered the consequences of harsh laws.

No one from the left wants to discuss federal laws or why the native Americans are having issues on the reservation. Seems the BLM threads go on forever, but people ignore the assaults and drugs on the reservations......that turn around and blame the government.

Holy cow, what a leap. This thread was just presented and has nothing to do with BLM and most who commented have condemned the actions here.
