With the failed Coup d'état in Turkey I was wondering, why is it America has been fortunate not to experience a Coup d'état?

And if there were those that wanted one just how much would it take to successfully execute and win one?

Key is civilian control by the President over the military and the separation of powers. President is dependent on the Congress providing money.

The US has a bigger military than the next 7-10 nations combined. The people would be immediately mowed down like a lawn.

Because we wouldn't know how to pronounce it.

Bingo. This nation isn't set up as a banana republic.

We keep the military locked up in the Pentagon with handcuffs on and tape over their mouths...exactly how they're supposed to be kept. That's why i hate seeing active duty military members running any kind of civilian agency like the CIA. Generals should be banned from having any jobs that allow them to manage civilians outside of the Pentagon.

Civilian control is the key. Most Generals stay out of politics. We never had a military class like many of the coup-prone countries. It is interesting that some former British colonial countries developed a military class while others didn't. Central American and some South American countries had little control over the military -- where the power resided in an elite group. Civil authority was secondary.

We have only had a handful of military Generals elected president... Washington, Jackson, Taylor, Grant, Eisenhower..... Any others I'm forgetting?

Thats easy, there are to many factions to unite behind someone who would LEAD a Coup d'etat

besides finding a leader, it wouldnt be that hard. Somewhere down the line of succession, there is a member of the other party. The only question is how far down the line is your guy.

We already had one in 1776.
And every time a new political party is elected to the White House!
