The Nation is the oldest continuously published weekly magazine in the United States, and the most widely read weekly journal of progressive political and cultural news, opinion and analysis. It was founded on July 6, 1865, as a successor to William Lloyd Garrison's The Liberator,[2] with the stated mission to "make an earnest effort to bring to the discussion of political and social questions a really critical spirit, and to wage war upon the vices of violence, exaggeration, and misrepresentation by which so much of the political writing of the day is marred."[3] It is published by The Nation Company, L.P., at 33 Irving Place, New York City.[4] It is associated with The Nation Institute. ...
Nope, they're both (all) crazy. No sane person ever called Bundy a "patriot" based on his Sovereign Citizen nonsense.
Agree they all most likely have serious mental health issues. That doesn't seem to stop the 'Patriot Movement' from dusting off old Cliven when expedient for promoting their agenda:
Personally, I see Cliven Bundy as a con-man & opportunist, 'by any means necessary' even if it means 'acting' like a SovCit. As long as he benefits, he'll glom onto any ideology:

..."We’re here to take our state back and act like we’re sovereign citizens,†Bundy said at the rally. ...
Good history up through the standoff in 2014, they really came close to a shoot out with the FBI and BLM. Glad cooler heads prevailed and no one was injured.

It's a balancing act for law enforcement, isn't it? Storming a vigilante stronghold would probably have led to dead people - mostly dead vigilantes, but the entire idea is to have them alive to stand trial. (The charming Bundyites had sworn they put their women and children out front, brave menfolk they are.) But if you don't get them locked up, they'll be reinforced in their ideas and possibly try something else dumb on a larger scale.
The FBI lucked out this time - the Malheur fiasco was easily contained and hadn't it been for the one fool who got his blaze-of-glory moment, it would have been a bloodless humiliation. Turned out the Bundys confused the Law's patience with weakness, got cocky, and underestimated what they were up against.

The last sentence is the full truth.
I just re-watched the road blockade video that led to Finicum' death last night after seeing it months ago, and in one part of Cox's video, Ryan Bundy said they all became careless and too confidant. The statement was said just after Finicum sped away from the first blockade.
Bundy was a lot more aware they were heading into seriously deep trouble than the others in the truck. A second later, he begins worrying about all the guns in the truck aloud, and I think that was the time he stashed the .38 revolver he had with him. He was unarmed when he exited the truck.
After this second look, I think Shawna Cox was responsible for part of the escalation that led to Finicum's death. She was encouraging him to just take off several times during the shouting match Finicum engaged in with an OSP officer at the first stop. She encouraged him in other statements as well.
Neither Cox nor Finicum believed any officers would actually shoot, but Bundy did.
None of them understood that the FBI's response strategy after Waco and Ruby Ridge had radically changed. For over 20 years, other sovereign citizens who confronted arrest were all isolated and cut off from the basics and then, just waited out until they gave up.
That was the plan at the bird refuge compound. Since the group there was so large, the FBI moved slowly, ratcheting up the isolation a little at a time, allowing the paranoia to build. They were ready to out-wait the occupiers for as long as it would take, and they took advantage of every little opportunity they got to increase the pressure bit by bit.
That's what caused Ammon Bundy to quietly leave and go looking for an escape plan. Ammon had already sought out some groups in W. Oregon close to the Idaho border, but they were too far away to have made a good getaway, so he turned to the sympathetic sheriff in neighboring Grant county, 100 miles away.
All of them in both vehicles were going to surrender to that sheriff, or use him as cover to slip away.
Ammon was trying to just split with his small close circle and leave all the rest of them to their fates in the bird refuge.
He had his little underground railroad all put together, and understood the stand-off at the refuge was rapidly falling apart.
He was going to be far away when all the hang-arounds were going to panic and get into real trouble. It had all grown out of his control.
The Sharp girl was just stray baggage. Her mother was already on her way to John Day with the rest of her brood, so she would rejoin them as soon as they arrived.
