"Security personnel at the Olympics threatened to eject an Iranian volleyball fan for holding a large sign protesting the fact that women are banned from attending matches in Iran.

Since the ban was put in place in 2012, women have been barred from volleyball matches in Iran and have even been arrested in attempts to enter stadiums. Iranian officials have claimed that mixed attendance at sports events is “un-Islamic,” threatens public order and exposes women to crude behavior, according to Human Rights Watch, an international organization that does research and advocacy for human rights."

I say good for her for taking a stand publicly. What is up with these oppressive regimes like Iran always trying to control every single aspect of people's lives?

Because the International Olympic Committee wants the Olympics to be good, clean entertainment. Plus, it's bad for NBC and the advertisers.

Because the Olympics is about sports, not politics. They have a habit of ejecting those who forget that. Good.

That's lame, too. I know several Persian women and they would suffer terribly on every level if they were back in Iran.

Have to agree once you make an exception for one then every group will want to protest. This is not the venue for that and it will be a Pandora's box if opened.

Can't they at least be denied hosting games in Iran? Isn't there a clause somewhere in the IOC rules about equal participation by race and gender? What if they prevented blacks form attending games? Would you say the same thing?

I'm not justifying it. I'm telling you the truth, and the truth is the Olympics is about money. Anything that deviates from the nice, pretty fluff and impacts this cash cow will be stopped.

[if not by the IOC, then by NBC]
