Equally guilty based on that law does not mean he should be equally sentenced. The judge could have given the actual killer DP, and the driver a life in prison. Texas is not the only State with this law.
There was no life in prison without parole in 1992. In fact, at that time it had only recently been changed from a life sentence for capital murder having a minimum of something like 15 years to a life sentence for capital murder having a minimum of 35 years. Many people felt that murder or accessory to murder deserved life without parole, and short of that, the death penalty.
I wouldn't have sentenced the getaway driver for something the other guy did inside the store. If both people were inside the store when it happened, then I would understand the sentence. But the jury obviously felt he deserved more than 15 or 35 years in prison for it.

Wood was outside the store when the clerk was shot; however, after the clerk was shot and lying on the floor bleeding to death, Wood essentially stepped over the dying clerk to retrieve the safe and other items.
Capital murder. Your actions led to the death of a human being. You did kill him.
