Then how do you know something needs to be done by government?

Do you wish to blame Congress for debasing the money system, so that prices are 10,000% over 1900-1910?
Or do you wish to blame the socialist tax system that burdens the worker with the cost of the parasites (takers and administrators and bureaucrats and politicians)?
Or is it the fault of the state of emergency, since 1933?
Or the lack of lawful money (gold / silver coin)?
Or do you wish to blame the banking system (usurers) and the worthless IOU in circulation?
Or do you wish to blame the landowners who want to make land "pay"?
Or do you wish to blame the local taxing authorities who jacked up property taxes, which are passed onto the renter?

Great, then with that additional money you are saving, since you don't need a car, you should be able to afford rent.

Your fault too.

No one forced you to take liberal arts. That was your choice.

Making bad choices and then blaming other for them, that is an art. See? You too can apply those skills, surely some organization somewhere is looking for people who know how to blame everything on someone else.

There are people making millions of dollars playing the blame game.

So, why aren't you?

For starters, I blame Congress for failing to enforce our porous borders and thereby allowing millions of people into this country illegally.

Also, I blame every local taxing authority which imposes unfair, non-uniform property taxes on rentals, as well as every state which allows or pushes local taxing authorities to do so.

Ahh government. Big daddy. The answer to all of life's little quandaries.

This thread may have gone about as far is it'll go idea-wise. We've heard your message loud and clear. Now I wonder if YOU will make any personal choices that might improve your lot.

The blame game crowd is toast. Refugees and other immigrants have your number and they will do just enough to get ahead of you.

Too bad.

As you sit there banging on a keyboard hoping a check miraculously arrives in the mail to pay your rent, someone who can't speak English is learning it, someone who doesn't have an abive minimum wage job is looking and getting one and someone who previously couldn't afford a nice place to live just got exactly that.

All that happened during the time you sat around blaming everyone else for your misery.

Why? Maybe because there is no viable market for cheap apartments.

That was in Fayetteville, NC and yes it is considered a metro area.
Many know how to prioritize things in their life to make this a reality. When my husband and I first got married we knew how much we made together and how much we could afford. We made it work. Yes we did have to drive further and also make personal sacrifices but it was worth it. We didn't complain thinking that we were entitled to a place that was in the middle of a city. We knew what we could afford. Even now. We know what we can and cannot afford.

Where is the money going to come from? Are you willing to pay more taxes on top of what you already pay?
Also if you live on Federal property you are governed by Federal laws too.

The rental market is very tight. Either the unit is 100 years old with various defects or it is too far from campus. Finally she located an ideal tiny studio which monthly rent is $1,650. However, upfront she has to pay one month security deposit + first month's rent + last month's rent + 3/4 month's rent as commission to the realtor + lock replacement fee = $1,650 x 3 + $1,273.5 + $100 = $6,287.5

And after all the hassles, the realtor told her that the landlord thinks she is not qualified because she has to have at least $100,000 annual income to be eligible to rent this studio! So I have to co-sign the lease.
Boston is not the entire country.

Rentals with reasonable proximity to major schools typically command a premium.

Many don't take housing into consideration when choosing a school that will have them.
