Keep "guessing" because of your OWN basis you attempt to put words in the OP,s mouth.
I WILL say, if in the act of committing a crime someone loses THEIR LIFE, YOU SHOULD LOOSE YOURS.
Is THAT plain enough for you?
So, how many people had they killed before this happened? The answer is none. They had served time for theft and for having a gun.
EVERY STATE in this country catches and then releases felons after they have served their sentence. It is surprising people are not familiar with this concept.
The people in Illinois and Chicago elect the politicians who pass the laws impacting their state and city.
I wonder why posters who don't live in Chicago or Illinois get so upset about crime in a place they don't live? The citizens who live in Chicago have made their political choices. Voters could change the laws by changing their politicians. They haven't. So be it. The state of affairs in Chicago is not anything outsiders should be concerned about.

If we did this EVERY time it would send a VERY LEAR message and a STRONG deterrent to those thinking about committing crimes.
The "swinging door" has GOT TO STOP!
If you care so much about what happens to them, how many have YOU taken on parole into YOUR HOUSE?
Or are you just another "all mouth and no action" type?
We have the death penalty. It hasn't stopped people from killing each other yet. You can't expect the irrational to think in a rational way either.
Did the cop that blows away a citizen without justification consider before hand that he might face murder charges? No, he simply allowed his emotions to get the best of him. Very few plan a murder with the thought they are going to get caught. They plan it trying to get away with it.
You can't teach people that killing is wrong by killing.
Actually they push for no sentencing at all for carrying a gun.
That's not illegal and protected by the 2nd Amendment. That's like saying the ACLU defends someone verbally threatening someone because they defend free speech.
They've came out strongly for laws when someone is caught illegaly carrying a gun.
"This specific provision incorrectly targets otherwise law-abiding citizens, rather than deterring violent criminals with harsher penalties," the group said in an Oct. 10 statement.
Yes they will argue against laws that make it illegal to simply carry a gun while otherwise obeying the law. We are discussing those who have broke the laws in the past. Not arresting non violent offenders. We have covered this already. It's why they release the violent. There isn't room and it becomes unaffordable.

True, but if its about choosing the right politicians, then maybe they are going in the right direction. Homicides in Chicago are declining at a higher rate than in Houston.
