In a maritime world of mega tankers and even bigger container carriers how would "Pirates" even steal anything. Its not like they could put a couple of containers on a row boat or something. If they steal the entire ship where are they going to go to sell their loot? 5,000 containers of miscellaneous stuff or a zillions barrels of crude oil is not all that useful or easy to turn into cash or bank accounts.
Sounds like this attack was a couple of jerks playing the I'm more macho than you and shooting at a US warship. Cooler heads determined our response. I would have used the ship's weaponry to obliterate the launch site and everything in a half mile radius.
You don't fire off (relatively) expensive missiles for fun and typically it's a ransom play than true "grab the booty" piracy for the very excellent reasons you cite.
Your opinions never go further than finding out if it's a (D) or an (R) so frankly your whining is pretty funny.
Mathguy, it appears he was responding to Jimmyp25's post blaming this on Obama. It's not partisan to call out these "every thing is Obama's fault" posters...
I've had the chance to return fire in combat smart guy. I've been in briefings that cover rules of engagement. My DD214 shows OIF I and II... Where does your experience in this matter come from, Fox News?
Was your experience under Obama and recent? No, it's 6 years old +/- given your DD214. then you have no idea about the Naval rules of engagement that are currently set up in theater. Wouldn't that be a fair statement?
I'm not denigrating your service, don't get me wrong. I am saying that what I'm hearing from current service members about the ROE/RUF is, well, scary to say the least.
Are they wrong?

I have multiple friends and family that are still serving. Not one of them have been given an order to not defend themselves. I've never seen any ROE that have been that way either. And I wouldn't follow it... I just don't believe nothing like that exists in this context..
