Wait for it to fall apart and start over. We may be pretty close after this election. Record numbers of people are going to be very upset regardless of who wins, and if that isn't enough, whoever does win is likely to to some amazingly dumb and/or awful things.
I hate to tell ya this but...it is not only falling apart but it has crashed and burned.
A good start would be making it illegal for legislators to accept $$$ from special interests. Of course the odds of getting them to vote for such legislation would be about the number of grains of sand on Miami Beach to 1.
Democrats recently tried to pass campaign finance reform laws but republicans in congress stopped them.
Vote out all those who have held office more than 2 terms in the senate and more than 4 terms in the house. Reinstitute term limits.
But how do we prevent "Meet the new boss, just the same as the old boss?"
I think that's what the OP is asking. How do we make real, structural change? Just substituting this face for that face doesn't do it, and that's all the different parties are--different faces telling different stories that they think different people want to hear to get them elected. The structure, the machine has to change.
Please don't say by voting because we have been voting for hundreds of years and things just keep getting worse and worse. I feel like there is nothing we can do but ride the crap down the drain...
The first step would be to not be so divided. Then PC has to be thrown out the door, some truths hurt, forward progression can't happen without some feelings getting hurt.
Neither of those things will happen, so a circling down the drain we will go.....
It's a rigged system and the biggest flaw is that you have to be wealthy to be more than just a local politician, and you have to take donations so that you're beholden to people and groups when you're running a larger campaign.
Campaigning, as it exists today, should be outlawed. That would be the first step. With the internet, there's no need to raise big money and travel around the country. Post online what you would do about each issue, and post your voting history if already in office. We would be far better informed that way than the way it's currently done. NO tv commercials - nothing but your website.
The second thing I'd like to see happen is the dissolution of all parties, because the party loyalists are the ones who have led to the demise of our country.
Third, you cannot vote without valid identification stating you're a citizen.
But these are pipe dreams. Nothing is likely to change because we have very little say about anything other than our day-to-day lives.
The problem is we do not have all have identical viewpoints and philosophies. Until we are all united, we're not really going to change things from the way they are now.
But how do we prevent "Meet the new boss, just the same as the old boss?"

But we still do not know how to change the structure.
