Several groups on Grounds collaborated to write a letter to University President Teresa Sullivan against the inclusion of a Thomas Jefferson quote in her post-election email Nov. 9.

In the email, Sullivan encouraged students to unite in the wake of contentious results, arguing that University students have the responsibility of creating the future they want for themselves.

“Thomas Jefferson wrote to a friend that University of Virginia students ‘are not of ordinary significance only: they are exactly the persons who are to succeed to the government of our country, and to rule its future enmities, its friendships and fortunes,’” Sullivan said in the email. “I encourage today’s U.Va. students to embrace that responsibility.”

Some professors from the Psychology Department — and other academic departments — did not agree with the use of this quote. Their letter to Sullivan argued that in light of Jefferson’s owning of slaves and other racist beliefs, she should refrain from quoting Jefferson in email communications.

time to throw out the constitution - it was written by 'racists'

Why would ice crystals formed in clouds care about what Jefferson said?

Looks to me like the conservatives are the ones who are poutraged on a daily basis. They seem fixated on every silly thing that college students say and do and must share their special feelings with everyone.

I agree. Is any actual public policy being written by 20 year old screaming college leftists or their stoned out psych professors?

From the reaction of right wing radio worshippers, you would think these people are actually in the government.

Why would you work or attend school at a university founded by Thomas Jefferson if you are outraged by just reading a quote by him?
If anything connected to Thomas Jefferson bothers you that much, then you need to quit your job at a university founded by him immediately and go find a job somewhere else.
If a quote connected to Thomas Jefferson offends you just for being connected to Thomas Jefferson, you never should have attended a university founded by him in the first place.

When you have to resort to name calling to make a point, the entire point becomes invalid.

“The intention of the email was to start a conversation with our administration regarding ways to be more inclusive,” Hurd said in an email statement.
Be more inclusive by excluding Jefferson and those who admire him... Orwellian.

That's the Left. Up is down, right is wrong.

Apparently you don't. You can be hired and remain gainfully employed at many American universities, even if your main energies are devoted to tearing down everything your institution has built and all that it stands for.
