My father was from Oklahoma and was called a 'redneck' all his life. My mother was raised in hill country in Mississippi. I guess that makes me half redneck and half hillbilly. I am proud of my heritage, but I learned to keep my mouth shut.


In the 50's, I was told in school that I did not speak correctly and should work to erase my accent. I was taught that my people has no history worth remembering, and the history we did have was shameful. In college, when we were assigned a project that included talking about our ancestors, my professor questioned me about my Creek ancestor. He had never heard of the Creek Indians and though I was making it up.


Well, guess what. It didn't work. When I speak, people know I am from the South. I think people who make crude jokes about the rednecks, hillbillies and the South only display their ignorance. Yes, that includes Jeff Foxworthy. As far as when other people think, to h*ll with them.

There's no monolithic anything. But for most people of European descent the culture of their distant ancestors is of little importance. They are white Americans and that's their culture. What else could it be?
