If you read the whole article it says that the protestors were starting fires near the bridge and throwing rocks at the officers. The protestors need to learn that there are consequences to their actions. If they had behaved like civilized adults then the cops wouldn't have sprayed them, instead, the protestors decided to behave like brain dead Neanderthals.

They were starting fires to stay warm due to subfreezing temperatures.

Indian country in the northern plains is kind of like Faulkner's description of Mississippi: not only is the past not forgotten, it isn't even in the past. A lot of these folks remember that they were once a great nation. The Sioux were once one of the most powerful groups of tribes in North America. They were the last to be conquered and they haven't really accepted subjugation. Because of that they are probably the most politically engaged native group in the US, and if they feel like they are being pushed, they don't hesitate to push back.

When is Obama going to do something? The last I heard he wanted to let this play out, well its going in a direction where the police are using too much force against these native tribes.

I give the native people a lot of credit for standing up for their water rights, sets an example that we need more water protectors.

The woman hit with the concussion grenade tonight lost her arm. The doctors had to amputate because the damage was too severe. The cops are out of control, and need to be slapped down hard.

The oil companies are refusing to design a safe pipeline. Every service station in America had to dig up its tanks and install leak containment and sensors, but the oil companies just dump a Chinese-made thin wall pipe in a trench and call it good.

They have no containment. The only sensors are at the pumping station, where they go "Oops" if the oil doesn't come out the other end of the pipe.

They have no procedure for decommissioning old pipelines, and do not maintain old pipelines.

The entire project was rubber stamped by the Army Corps of Engineers without an Environmental Impact Statement.

For those who think the protest is on private property, those are tribal treaty lands and the tribe has a better title to the land than anyone else. It is DAPL that is trespassing, not the protesters.

This is what DAPL has planned for their pipeline:

Over 250 tribes have resolved to support the Standing Rock protesters. The unity of native sentiment on this is remarkable. It has been an awakening of Native American political action, and it's not going away. Here are just a few of the tribes participating in the protest:
