Why were hispanics protected - and not Italians? Seems every so called non profit organization out there now will only hire English -spanish speakers as employees - but no other language is required - are we also now funding non profits solely for the purpose of taking care of hispanics - who also have advantages in hiring - affirmative action promotions - special language signs & translations required everywhere - but none of that was done for Italians - who faced as much or more discrimination and still do?
Jews, Irishman, Poles, Germans, - all lumped together as WHITE. So a company must hire quotas of blacks, and hispanics - but not one job is required to go to any other specific ethnic group considered white. How did the country become so protectionist toward hispanics - legal or otherwise?

¿Perhaps because in America 450 million people speak Spanish?
¿Perhaps because in USA The most populous States, California, Texas, Florida are all named in Spanish and have large portions of Spanish speaking citizens?
As Far as I know the Country with More Italian Heritage in America is Argentina where they speak spanish.

Yes
There are two continent's of America but not sure 450 million is correct. It might be though. Its a bunch.
I think it's because by the time laws came out to protect or assist minorities, Italians were already well-established in American society, so there was no need.
For example, when the disparity studies are done to see if any groups are underrepresented in industry, and you look at the construction industry in NYC, you're not going to see Italian-owned companies suffering from a lack of participation per the percentage of Italian-Americans in the region. You won't see that for Native Americans, either. But you will see it for black or Latino firms.
fwiw all the peoples you listed experienced discrimination also,
basically everyone did except WASPS.
Everybody experienced discrimination. Especially Italians, Irish and Eastern Europeans. Going back further even Catholics, Puritans, Calvinist, Quakers, and Mormons experienced discrimination. Its sort of an initiation in the US.

Agree with you. Once Johnson initiated his "Great Society" and Affirmative Action was made mandatory things took on a natural process.
We have not accomplished much in race relations with Affirmative Action all these years and now that divide is being forced on the Spanish too. All the special attention but it produces very little unity.
It seems like in today's society the one most disliked group is white, American males.

I don't see how this hiring practice translates to the argument "Why were hispanics protected - and not Italians?"
If the job requires an English-Spanish speaking employee, why should they be required to hire others who cannot fulfill the job requirement?
Read the The Civil Rights Act of 1964. If an Italian can speak Spanish and was denied based purely on the fact they were Italian (and not because they didn't meet requirements), they would have a case.

you could quote the number of English speakers and state names but it would not reason protected class. Leftist nanny state and the policy of division wasn't strong when Italians came more likely
