How are Hispanics a protected class? Please enlighten me. What goodies have I been missing out on?

Hispanics are continuously belittled and ridiculed. You only need to read this Politics page to see, or watch Hollywood tv shows and movies where they are always portrayed as stereotypes.

As far as the Spanish, it's really hard to find even a 1st generation Hispanic who speaks good Spanish, let alone a 2nd or 3rd generation. And, they inter-marry with Whites and other ethnicities at high rates. Nice try.

Hispanics are hardly a protected class. This thread is silly.

There really aren't protected classes of people. Everyone is protected based on class(ifications). For example no one can be discriminated against based on race, whether they are black, white, brown, etc. No one can be discriminated based on sex, whether male, female, etc. However, these protectionist laws generally benefit the group that is the minority. However, when the minority becomes majority, the members of the former majority could have some claim to them if they were discriminated against.

Pretty much this, along with the Irish.

Yes. Neither were considered "White" by the founding fathers.

I could understand Italians, Sicilians, but Irish? Why did they think that?

Some are "dark" like the black Irish

Due to history. The Irish weren't considered "equals."

At least in my observation, by the third generation English is their first language both spoken and written while Spanish is secondary spoken (rarely written) language. Even their Spanish isn't that great at times.

I'm first generation US born. I don't speak my parent's native language... the same with my younger American born cousins. A few of us can understand but for the most part none of us can hold a conversation in native tongue. As a family, we tend to be more welcoming of Americanization; a few members (including I) are in interracial marriages.

Heck I speak better (a tiny bit) Russian, Portuguese, Korean and Spanish than my own native language simply by the foreigners that I interact with.

and no... Hispanics are not a protected class.

I rarely see discrimination against Hispanics in my area... they are well respected for their hard work ethic. There is a whole spanish speaking community nearby. If anything, their illegal status is what people find offensive... not necessarily their country of origin.

Some of the Brazilians don't see to get along with them.. not sure why.
