There is a continuous debate and see saw of how much the economy/services are more socialist versus more capitalist in successful governance. I think France is a great country for those that lean more toward Socialist but the fact is that it has dramatically stalled the economy/GDP. It looks like the French will follow the wave of the UK & USA and swing a bit to the right.
Aside from the economic/Socialist system, the Socialists/Leftists have backed immigration from 3rd world countries and countries which have repressive mindsets at odds with western values. More than a rejection of the economic/socialist model, the USA & UK have rejected the immigration policies of the Socialists/Leftists who are bringing in immigrants for votes that don't really fit into those western democracies.
Achievement, approval ratings, being a once in a generation trans-formative figure, the president that marked a turning point, etc., etc. Should I go on or do you get the point?
Yeah, 70%+ of the nation says the nation has been going in the WRONG direction for years, you mean that level of approval?
I feel the same way about what Trump should be allowed to do. Conservative government doesn't work well. Especially conservative governments ran by clowns like Trump.. Let him get his way. there will be no excuses...
I agree with the bold on Trump as well. However, I am hopeful that he will do decent. I am always hopeful regardless of the president and have optimism until I am shown something otherwise. Also, I am not a party liner and so I my optimism is not dependent on whatever letter falls after a politicians name. However, I do agree with you on Obama, that he will be seen as a good modern president. Those who despise him and think that he was not a decent president are living in a la-la land. I don't like everything he has done, but he had done a good job, better than his predecessor and that is how I judge an administration. By all accounts the country is "better" than we were when he took office. Also, the OP article about France (and we could extend this to Europe as a whole) is partially showing that we in the USA are better off than those over the pond based in part due to Obama's decisions on the economy in particular. Our country is much stronger economically than many of the other developed countries in the world based on his policies. Obama was recently in the Rolling Stone magazine and gave an interview and I agreed with him on the fact that he has done well on the economic front. Where they went wrong in the election is, like Shabazz said, picking a candidate that Democrats were not gung-ho about. Also that they focused more on foreign relation issues versus domestic issues of the working class. But the professional middle class in America has done much very well under Obama. However, I do worry that the Dems will try to go further to the left on too many loopy issues and make themselves much more out of touch with working and professional class Americans.
I will also note that I don't "get" the "socialism fails" stuff in France being that France has been a rather socialist country for many years and I honestly believe the world economy in regards to the stagnate economy of much of the world is to blame for its issues. That and the intense prejudice IMO that the people in France have against Muslims which caused so many attacks in France in the first place. History has a way of coming back and biting you on things like that.
Apparently, things aren't so good with liberals and socialists over there.. Hollande pushed his socialist agenda and found out they don't work out in real life... I was quite happy that he was able to push liberal agendas because I wanted the world to see just how bad it fails...

I suggest you keep reading. François Fillon is mixing rural conservatism with Thatcherism to fight against Marine LePen, a Nazi. Her policies are VERY similar to other European populist (communists) movements like Podemos in Spain and Tsipras in Greece.
It's too early to tell yet. Italy and Austria are having elections soon too.
It's too early to tell yet. Italy ... having elections soon too.
General legislative elections are not due in Italy until February 2018, but the country is holding actually tomorrow (Sunday, December 4) a referendum on cosmetic changes to its senate.
There is some chance that a 'no' victory could trigger a fall in its current (unelected) government, but not necessarily a dissolution of the legislature: according to a Constitutional Court ruling, the country has to change its electoral law, again, before the next general legislative election. But even if they do change the electoral law, again, it never has been a pertinent issue, it still isn't, and again nothing useful will come out of it.
Do they know the definition of insane?
Pre-vote polls on the upcoming referendum were closed by law about two weeks ago, but it appears that 'no' will win.
In Italy, the politicians have been talking about reform since the late 1980s, but over the past 25 years or so they have done only a lot of talking and a little bit of tinkering around the edges.
In reality, they have refused to adapt to changing economic conditions in the global environment, consciously pursuing instead a policy of protecting in the 1990s-2000s those who became comfortable in the 1970s-1980s at the expense of the upcoming generations, now going on a third.
Three lost generations, then, lots of wasted youthful talent. That's socialism.
Do they know the definition of insane? Actually they don't care.
Tomorrow's reform proposal not only does not address any pertinent economic issue (again, again, again), it actually appears retrograde politically and, again as mentioned, polls suggest that 'no' will win.
We'll know by Monday.
Good Luck!
