You should ask the British and the bankers in NY & London who financed it. They built an economy in the Southern colonies that was dependent upon slavery to turn a big profit for them.
When force is used to make people do things they do not wish to do, a bunch of resentment and bloodshed is created.

Did the Northern states ever apologize? All of the states had slavery at one time and the North profited greatly from slavery.
You are wrong for the most part, there was some slavery in the north, but not enough to amount to anything significant.
