I would just like to say something. I may be fervently Republican, as I have seen the ugly side of Democratic policies in real life. Not to mention how obscenely expensive it is. BUT. Even though some may fancy me a troll... (I hate trolls..) I wonder if there is some kind of desire to be nice to each other?
Because.. In our hyper-adversarial system, I think it has become more important to WIN than to.. be Civil.
Electors declare Trump President Monday after the bunk falls on deaf ears, even if maybe "Five" decide to buck the system. I personally believe that, even though inexperienced politically and maybe a little bullish and loudmouthed, apparently still... He is EXACTLY what we need. The election was November 8th, over on the 9th and the Electoral Vote has went with Trump in an amazing victory. I call sour grapes.
So. What's up. Can we hate each other nicely? Because, for some, this does go to our core about who we are as people.. winners, or poser losers. I am a winner, and winners win. Losers lose. Democrats lost... I am confused.
It's hard to find common ground when Trump supporters on this forum and in real life think like this:

I used to believe that we could be less partisan and all get along but I'm becoming less convinced. The last eight years the right wing has called our president every derogatory name in the book: Infidel, n*****, ape, terrorist, ect. As a liberal, your asking me to forget this and now be friends? I'm sorry, but Republicans have elected the most divisive president in U.S. history.
I'm willing to give Trump a shot but I will be pretty angry when Republicans realize the mistake they made with him.

This is my thoughts exactly, the right wingers started this feud. I think it honestly all goes back to the 94 Republican Revolution, and the 00 presidential election made it worse
I really don't understand what you just posted, but to answer the title, yes we can get along just fine. I have people at work who are just as fervently conservative as I am progressive and we get along just fine.
I do feel obligated to point out the true labeling of people based on their beliefs began with the Bill O' Reilly types who said if you believed "A" you were with me and if you believed "B" you were against me, removing all grey area from modern politics. Now both sides have run with it and it's impossible to have a civil conversation where we may disagree but understand each other's perspective or, science forbid, actually change our minds based on reason and understanding.

I agree that both sides need to be nice to each other which in the current climate is difficult. Constantly being told you're wrong usually create a negative reaction, and both Liberals and Conservatives do this to each other constantly. Unfortunately politics is a harsh game and there doesn't seem to be much room for being civil.
I think one way to alleviate this is to stop acting like the one you support be it Trump or Hillary or Obama are all perfect and have all of the answers to the problems, and the other person is all wrong or even a criminal.

I'm liberal and even I have to admit that in many cases liberals have been very insulting to conservatives, even I've done so. For things to get better this "My side is all right and the other side is all wrong." needs to stop.
It's not that simple anymore. I can get along with and even LIKE "classic liberals". You know who I mean. People what loved their country, but had different ideas.
What we have today is something different. If I had to put them into a category it would be "enemies of the state". They hate the fact that we even have a country, in many cases loathe their own skin, want to dissolve our borders, and long for a one-world society.
These people are my mortal enemies, and I have absolutely no desire to compromise or get along with them. I'd prefer they left the country, or were escorted out of it, frankly.
We probably have more common ground than shows up in this world of insults.
IMo, it started when the gerrymandered districts started showing up. The civil rights act rightly so said minorities needed a representative.
Texas is so gerrymandered that it will be two more census seasons to get it right, if the state wants to.
Looks to me like we are pretty much evenly divided. It just depends on who shows up at each election cycle. Could go either way.
It is time for all of us to put country above party. In my dreams

See, it's mentalities such as this which have caused genocide in the past, in places like Germany and Rwanda. No matter how much you may disagree with someone, they're still your fellow human being. Whether you realize it or not, you're dehumanizing those you call your enemy, which is the beginning of the path which eventually leaves it acceptable for them to be killed for their beliefs.

I couldn't be that lucky.
