The first time in 37 years the US has allowed the UN to pass a resolution to halt settlements. Obama chose to do this on his way out because he is a coward.
-----------------
Jerusalem (AFP) - Israel scrambled Saturday to contain the fallout from a UN Security Council vote to halt settlements in Palestinian territory after lashing out at US President Barack Obama over the "shameful" resolution.

The council passed the measure Friday after the United States abstained, enabling the adoption of the first UN resolution since 1979 to condemn Israel over its settlement policy.

By deciding not to veto the move, the US took a rare step that deeply angered Israel, which accused Obama of abandoning its closest Middle East ally in the waning days of his administration.

No, he chose to do it because Israel's actions are considered a violation of International Law, something Obama (with good reason) refused to condone.

The coward's way out would be to just rubber stamp anything Israel does as being OK.

Even a lot of Israelis oppose the settlements.

Don't know why people would think the U.S. needs to provide cover for illegal acts.

My understanding is that this area is called the Jewish Quarter and has been Jewish territory and homeland for over a thousand years until the Arab War and then during the six day war they got it back?? or it became in dispute who owned it??
I get overwhelmed with all the confusing reports on who owns what there.
Can someone please clarify this?
Thanks

37 years of cowardice and winger-wagging at Israel's actions with nothing actually being done about it. This resolution is toothless, but it's a start.

Many believe the law doesn't, or at least shouldn't apply to Israel. I don't see how there can ever be peace in the ME as long as they maintain that belief. Reason enough to lessen our involvement.

The settlements in question are mostly in the West Bank but also include Eastern Jerusalem, which the Palestinians see as their capital (future capital). Israel, of course, claims all of Jerusalem as its own. The argument has been ongoing since the 1940s.

well, Mr Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime Minister of Israel had already flaunted his stance in UNGA by saying, "UN should not dictate its terms to Israel."

I admire them for the courage they hold that they are not afraid of anything powerful when it comes to their interest.

So let's stay out of it.

Doubtful, there are at least as many 'clear' stories in the region as there are competing factions. Exactly why I don't understand why we seem to believe we can be the ones to solve that puzzle.
