I don't think the president should make statements at all when things like this happen. In reality this type of crime - whether it is deemed a hate crime or not - is not uncommon. Mass shootings and terrorist attacks are more worthy of a presidential comment IMHO. While awful, this was kidnapping someone they knew and holding him hostage while attacking him. Terrible but not rare; an isolated incident affecting one person somewhere. Not worthy of the president commenting. Not something that is incredibly shocking, like 9/11 or San Bernardino or Sandy Hook or Orlando or the NJ/NY bomber.
I agree. I like Obama a lot, but I hated it when he opened his mouth regarding isolated crimes or police shootings with a racial angle. It just made things worse, especially because he tended to do it before all the facts were in. I didn't agree with some of his other decisions either, but the racial stuff got under my skin.
This is home turf, maybe a nice comment like he made in the Michael brown / Trayvon / Philando Castile etc. case would be great. He has been fantastic for race relations.
It is only a 30 minute torture/ racist video, certainly he can look glum, maybe bite his lower lip and make a nice statement. The white kid is special needs and mentally retarded. This would be great time for a statement on racism in america
Obama talk about this?
Ain't happenin".
He's the most racist president -- by far -- in any of our lifetimes.
Yup. If something is racially motivated, an isolated incident, why does the race of the perpetrators and victims matter? If you think there is a difference, you're part of the problem.
A mass shooting or terrorist event that is racially or politically (terrorism is usually politically) motivated would be a bigger deal, as it would likely be a more widespread event affecting more people, likely with some deaths, with the threat and resulting fear greater.
But basic isolated assaults, whether possible hate crimes or not? They happen all the time. Especially in CHICAGO. This is not to downplay them generally, only to downplay them to the level that the president needs to get involved in any way, including giving a simple statement.
You should tell that to Obama, who involved himself in everything from Professor Gates to Trayvon Martin to Michael Brown -- without knowing the facts, but still running his mouth anyway.

The difference is Obama has repeatedly talked about isolated white on black incidents but has never done the reverse. He sent a White House delegation to the funeral of Michael Brown, a common street thug killed when he attacked a cop after robbing a store. He only has sympathy when the victim is black or Muslim. His clear racism and identity politics is much of the reason why the Democratic Party has suffered such large losses under his watch. He has set race relations back 50 years.
Obama doesn't give a rats ass about anybody in Chicago, white or black. And he probably doesn't even remember who Michael Brown was, let alone cared if he lived or died.
