Their customer service policy was dreadful. Sears was about the only place my parents and relatives had to shop in the rural area they lived.
Every holiday was another story about a lawn mower they wouldn't fix or dishwasher that didn't or some sort of nonsense.
I'm surprised they lasted this long.
As a kid in Chicago, Sears was the place where a lot of the middle- class shopped. It was one stop shopping for the masses. A substantial part of their business was catalog sales. Where else could you buy 2 pair of gym shoes in a rainbow of colors for $5.00. My sister and I spent hours pouring over their holiday Wish Catelog.
During my ackward years my mom sent me to Sears Charm School to learn how to walk without falling down or knocking something over. I proved to be hopeless and fell off the make shift stage during the goofy graduation ceremony. Yeah, TMI.
Somewhere along the way, Sears lost their way and never recovered. I eventually outgrew the ackward stage and stopped falling and knocking things over. I can however still do a mean Sears pivot n
It's been one slow death spiral, ever since.
On another thread I shared my recent Sear's experience. I returned a Lands End coat I bought online.
2 lines, 20 people deep. One of the two cashiers left to take her break then the scramble as 2 lines attempted to merge into one. Then the remaining cash register printer ran out of paper and the cashier had no idea what to do. People were throwing their intended purchases on the floor and walking out of the store. Shoppers were kicking merchandise as they progressed through the store on their way out the door.
I have never seen anything like it.
I too gave up On my way out a distant door I looked for an open cashier's station in other departments. There were none. Huge store at the busiest time of year and there's no way to pay for anything.
i finally came upon a cashier in the lawn mover section ( December in Chgo Metro) with no line. He took care of my return.
Sears has nearly completed its natural lifespan. They are not moving overseas. They are dying. There is nothing that Trump can do about that. Customers just do not want to buy what they are selling.
Exactly.
Sears and Kmart became complacent and didn't change with the times. Therefore they have been left behind. Wal-Mart, Lowes, Home Depot, Best Buy, Costco, etc all do everything Sears used to do but better. Plus there is also online competition as well. Today, I would consider both Sears and Kmart to be nearing "zombie" stage. They are definitely past the point of no return. I don't see any possible way Sears or Kmart could "re-invent" themselves to bring back customers.
It's a world of COSTCO, Amazon, and Walmart...things change.
