Only 50% of returning vets who need mental health treatment get the help they need. And 25% of veterans returning from those two countries show some sign of substance abuse.

I'm surprised more incidents don't occur given the lack of support provided to them. It's a crime that we don't do all we can to help those who serve.
What's a crime is not learning something from all of the historical experience of sending American boys and girls all over the world into some of the worst chit-holes you can imagine and after 100 years or more of doing this ...still no strict control over "in country" drug usage, no careful monitoring of psyche health while in a battle zone, and no follow-up upon return to the "world". They're essentially on their own after they've given the MIC what it needed.

This is not a new phenomena but to observe the U.S. and others response AFTER THE FACT, one would be left no other conclusion than this is deliberate. It's been around and earlier called "shell-shock" since world war ONE! There can be no excuse in the 21st century to have this situation go relatively unaddressed pre-emptively.

If you're going to commit to sending your young into battle zones anywhere, any time then you MUST commit to giving them all the resources they need to perform optimally, both while there and later upon their return. The present system takes them out of functioning civil society for the time they're deployed and it subjects them to unacceptable risks of leaving them out of functioning society after they've returned.

It's just not good use of your best and brightest to spend millions training them, millions deploying them, give them the best of munitions only to spend mere pennies on providing them the tools to function normally upon their re-integration to society.

It's criminal AND STUPID!

I made an earlier post suggesting that family members of victims stumbling upon this site, would be left with no feelings other than complete disgust.

Sounds like the guy was a paranoid schizophrenic. Ex-military. He had gone to the FBI and told officers he was being forced to watch ISIS video, CIA was controlling his mind, some truly bizarre stuff. They had him go to a mental hospital for evaluation. But in the end, it was clear this guy was living on a different plane of reality, and it was maybe not so unexpected that he would engage in an action this barbaric. As long as weapons of mass lethality are available, we will never be able to stop people like this. It's the new reality and we need to get used to it. I'm not prepared to turn the country into a police state in response to these isolated incidents.

I apologize but this really irks me. I believe it will never change due to the individuals in charge of our Government. We were discussing this at work, I work in psych, talking about this and other mass shootings. Most are done by individuals who have fallen out of the mental health system. When is the Government going to wake up, stop bickering, and work on solutions. All they argue on is second Ammendment Rights and never address the real problems.

Need Universal Mental Healthcare for all
Change HIPPA rights for the mentally ill
Need to lower cost of medications. Make them affordable and available to all.
Bust up big pharmaceutical monopolies
End pharmaceutical lobbyist involvement in politics
Deregulate the FDA
Increase funding to mental health
Legalize marijuana. Regulate it like alcohol. Outside of medicinal marijuana allow businesses to grow and produce their own marijuana.
Create federal excess tax on marijuana/alcohol/cigarettes to pay for mental health & substance abuse services
Legalize hard drugs regulate by DPH/Sell in designated Government facilities/Use in designated Government facilities
End war on drugs. Utilize the money else where; Fund the police better and fund programs helping to end homelessness.
Suspend second Ammendment Rights of any one released from a psychiatric facility in 24 month's
If currently in therapy Psychiatrist has to write letter approving individual is allowed to purchase a firearm
Suspension of 2nd Ammendment rights does not affect your use of firearm at work if part of your duties/Decision left to employer
Increase funding to the the VA
Set up federal agency of mental health & substance abuse
Increase group home's nationwide
Work towards ending homlesness
Add more social service programs at schools

On the bold: the only 'excuse' typically used is 'plausible deniability'. Agree with you.

Personally, at this point, with what is known with this particular guy, it sounds like he was trained to follow orders (all types from the mundane to the extreme) & started hearing voices in his mind alone who were giving orders.

There are probably 5000 or more sites discussing this. Many far more extreme than this one.

A few have been asking that for years. You will never stop all bad things from happening but I believe we can do far better than we do.

We need to have that conversation but we are more concerned with which country we will bomb next. If what we are doing to members of our military can be understood as sometimes creating bad things, one can only pretend to understand what continually bombing other places is doing to them.

If the Government made those changes mentioned above about 75% to 80% of senseless mass shootings/stabbings/bombings would stop in America.
