A different topic now, apart from Trump and the US. Let's go back to Europe. If you would be an Englishman, would you support the monarchy or rather want its abolition?

About me: Loyal subject to Her Majesty. The monarchy represents the British culture and history, and abolishing it would come equal to abolish the past of the UK.

Your thoughts? Most of you would probably not care, but try to decide for your support for or against the monarchy.

Always thought of them as well-to-do welfare recipients.

I'm not sure I would completely abolish the monarchy, but I would like to see them employed.

FTR, I totally support abolishing use of the word "rather".

Not to hurt your feelings - But I think the Royals and whole notion of a monarchy and fuedalism stinks.

I'd love to see the queen and the rest of the royals demphised.

Against. Tradition aside, what kind of power does the monarchy actually have? It seems they've turned into symbols rather than wielding the power they once had.

Sometimes ya gotta let the past go.

The monarch wields no power. De jure, the British Monarch still has power, de facto though, not. The last monarch who used somewhat of her power was Queen Victoria, but that is even only little.

Does their tourism value exceed the cost of maintaining the monarchy?

Monarchies have outlived their usefulness. Look at North Korea.

I voted Yes.

I think "the common people" have a tendency to look up to celebrities, and try to emulate them.

The royalty, because of the nature of their position, need to have broad appeal. They, at least from the outside, need to appear like exemplary people, with high standards and morals.

In America, our defacto royalty, are generally entertainment icons, who have terrible morals, and low standards of behavior.

Lots of people in America, especially women, are quite fixated on the British royalty. We held Princess Diana in high esteem, as well as Will and Kate.

I think it helps to create a real "national identity", based on culture and traditions. Which helps to anchor a people, make them more proud, and more resistant to influence from foreigners.

I think there are is a lot of tourism benefits as well.

I'm sure the Windsors are accomplished enough to get other jobs. But even if they keep their current ones, there's no reason that I can see for british taxpayers to subsidize their housing at the current level.
