These NATO countries are not spending their fair share on defense - Jul. 8, 2016

The U.S. also spends the highest proportion of its GDP on defense: 3.61%. The second biggest NATO spender in proportional terms is Greece, at 2.38%, according to NATO.

Re-read your link. The article clearly uses the words "overall defense spending".

What is unclear about this chart from the reference I posted above?

Currently Germany, along with several other European NATO allies, spend far less on defense than the 2 percent of GDP (Gross Domestic Product) they pledged to spend in 2014.
Yes Europe, the NATO gravy train may be over. They don't even spend 2 percent of their GDP for NATO.

I don't know why I thought of this... I hear people talk about we work too hard over here in America. We should be like the people in Europe who have all of this time off. Maybe they have all of that time off because we are working our butts off over here paying for NATO. No wonder they can take it easy. They may have to work a little harder if we split and they actually have to defend themselves.
(Semi-sarcasm alert on the last paragraph )
The EU has been working towards it's own military long before Trump was elected.

NATO isn't going away.

Do you not know that social security, and medicare/medicaid make up over 50% of the federal budget, and military/homeland security make up only 16%?

The social programs dwarf military spending.

The phrase "collective defense" spending means something. Every member of the NATO body should commit to the 2% number they agreed on.

What have you been drinking. Do you mistakenly think we still have a 20 year gap?

We don't, not even close. EU can fund and develop an F35 / 5th gen plane a lot faster then you think. and cheap drones will make these pointless without total air domination....

Our NATO allies are in fact the sole suppliers for a number of major components, Turkey and India want to build their own engines my friend.

you are so out of your depth it is shocking.

The big advantage we have is that we can avoid a land war at home, that is about it. Our weapons are cool but so are a whole bunch of nations.

I'd love to reduce the giant money sucking vacuum called the Pentagon.

Just like other areas of government, they need to see a budget reduction.

Fulfill our obligations to our troops and what they have earned while ending the train of money send to maintaining our military around the globe.

It's time our military was tasked with defending OUR shores not the borders of foreign lands.

It doesn't say what it represents. However, I know it doesn't show U.S. military expenditures on NATO.

TOTAL U.S. military expenditures world-wide are about $600 billion according to Wikipedia.
