Again, this is something every other country requires of immigrants. They won't let you in unless you can prove you won't be a burden on their social welfare system.
But I agree. The histrionics will be terrific. He will be accused of starving children as if it is our responsibility to feed the entirety of Central America.

The liberal elite celebs will have a fit if they can't get cheap labors in the form of maids and child care, not to mention if the wall is built, how are they going to get their drugs if the wall is built.
This sounds like a good start. By far the biggest issue with illegal immigration is the drain on the American taxpayer. Eliminate that drain and a lot of the objections go away.

In addition - current family-based immigrants must be sponsored by a US citizen and are ineligible for government assistance for 5 years. If they do manage to get welfare then the sponsor must pay it back. The laws are there and there is no evidence of wide spread abuse.
