During the George W. Bush administration, the Justice Department conducted a five-year investigation into alleged voter fraud. When U.S. attorneys across the country failed to find misconduct and resisted pressure to bring partisan prosecutions, they were fired. The resulting scandal led to the forced resignation of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.
Backs away? No, there are a million other things happening simultaneously, taking your focus away from the big picture. No one has backed away. There is just more added to the plate.
Squirrel!(and the democrats start running)
In a democratic and Constitutional Republic, there's nothing more serious than suspicion of voting fraud. That puts the entire political system and organization into question. That should be the top priority by any governing politician.
If Trump's administration is putting that on the back sit, that's because the voting fraud case is certainly not serious at all...
Of course Trump backed off on his 3 million illegal voter lie. He knows that if the investigation was done, no voter fraud would be found, and that would forever cement his popular vote loss forever and make him look like a lying fool. No, in his mind he's better off with no investigation so he can always try to cast doubt about the results.
The "3 million illegal voters" thing is one of the most disgusting, terrible LIES ever told by a sitting President.

When candidate Donald Trump claimed that the election would be “rigged,” and when President Trump now claims that the electoral process has been massively corrupted by millions of illegal votes, these false assertions have real consequences. They undermine confidence in our elections and democracy, and create a dishonest rationale for voter-suppression laws targeting the poor, the young and minorities.
I think it's odd that so many Trump supporters seemed more concerned about the transgendered bathroom issue than the investigation into the most heinous attack on our democracy in the history of the US.
Of course it would because the only fraud committed was on the right.
I am not naive enough to proclaim that the Democrats have never committed voter fraud. But FIVE MILLION ILLEGAL VOTES?
You can't make allegations like that and then just walk away.
