Here, when one of the mostly black school districts started busing their students to a white suburban school, the parents freaked out. They were demanding the schools install metal detectors at all the entrances, have drug sniffing dogs in the schools, and extra police because of "all the violence"... stabbings, fights, armed robbery. And not just for the high schools. Parents were even saying that first graders would be bringing guns and drugs to school.

Parents threatened to move out of the school distirct if they allowed the transfers, said home prices would plummet, and test scores would cause the district to lose their accredition as well.

Parents even tried to get the schools start time changed by 40 minutes to make the school less desirable to students living far away.

They were angry. St. Louis Public Radio recorded the town hall meeting, and anyone who thinks the suburban schools would happily take in students from failing schools can have a listen to some of their comments.

And that is exactly what will happen if the voucher system gets started up. People will freak out, rightly or wrongly, and it will be from both sides.
