President Trump continued his war on facts Tuesday, inaccurately claiming that the nation's murder rate was the highest it's been in nearly 50 years.

Trump was holding a listening session with county sheriffs from across the U.S. at the White House Tuesday morning when he made the untrue statement.

Trump said that the U.S. murder rate was the highest it had been "in 45 to 47 years" — a claim he had also made on the campaign trail numerous times.

And, the national murder rate is actually only the highest it's been since 2009

But their strategy is pretty transparent. Spread fear and doubt, rile up the unwashed masses and direct their anger toward a common enemy - Muslims, inner city crime, other countires taking our jobs. In every convincing lie there is a little bit of truth of course.

When everyone is on edge because of all these "threats" to our freedom and life, claim that only you can solve the problem but you need special powers to do that. And that when you lose both your freedom and your security.

He misspoke. The murder rate had the biggest increase in 45 years. Jeez. The guy isn't perfect.
