It's within the confines of cable companies not offering ESPN as well as a la Carte plans not being subscribed to that have ESPN in its package...probably more of the latter.
That's how their "subscribers" went down from 100 million to 88 million. That and people dumping cable completely.
This right here. I know dozens of people that have "cut the chord" in the last year or so - had nothing to do with politics.
people are cutting the cord, because cable companies are charging too much and because they have been allowed to enjoy protected state back monopolies and have been allowed to buy out competitors and use their muscle to buy up content producers..
the result, about a million a year are dropping services and looking for ways to go around them, so that they can buy what they want instead of being force fed ESPN, and 30 channels they never watch.
Nothing worse than watching sports and having to listen to a bunch of political talk. I don't care if it is left or right, I don't want to hear it. I am there for the sports.
People are cutting the cord due to the cost AND the lack of quality content. Disney has destroyed ESPN by making it political.
No one is cutting the cord because ESPN is "too political" - that is forum war nonsense. OK, maybe there's some random dude out there doing this - but it is not what is behind this trend (which has been going on for YEARS!).
People are cutting the cord because cable is expensive and they realize that 80-90% of the channels go unwatched and are unnecessary. They realize they can get the majority of the media content that they want with some combination of Netflix, Hulu, HBO Now, and other internet streaming services (like SLING).
This trend is particularly strong in young people my age. I haven't had cable in 15 years. Yes - I do miss live sports games on ESPN sometimes, but I catch many at bars. And I save hundreds a year.
Your thesis is just not based on any reality - you're really stretching to make this political when it is not at all (at least for the the vast, vast majority of people).

your flogging a dead horse , nobody is buying what you are trying to sell waldo... nobody.
ESPN is in fact the last big bit of leverage keeping people on cable. This is not up for debate, it is simply a fact and you can go look it up if it is too hard for you to accept from a liberal....
The way "Sports Media" treated Tim Tebow shows just how corrupt they are. I would love it, if I could cancel certain channels from my cable lineup.
