In the first seven weeks of 2017, CNN’s ratings are up 36% over the same period last year and 51% in the 25- to 54-year-old age group that advertisers seek most when they buy news programming. CNN’s competitors Fox News and MSNBC have seen similar increases. The ratings boon has to do with the flurry of activity coming out of the Oval Office.
“2016 was the biggest year in the history of cable news and 2017 will perhaps be even bigger,” Zucker said.
So CNNs ratings are terrible but they are up 36% from truly awful numbers? Fox is crushing them.
Fox was averaging 3 times the average amount of viewers of cnn after the election. Fox News was averaging an audience of 2.9 million viewers (compared to CNN’s 960,000 and MSNBC’s 959,000) a month after the election. Fox had higher numbers than cnn and msnbc combined in the 25-54 demographic
