The argument was they are rural and dont have a car.
I live in a rural area. There is no corner dollar store nor place they can sit and get free wifi.
So you don't have a McDonald's within 10 miles of your place?
I know some places are super rural and may not have that option but that is not the case for all rural areas. Like I stated the friend of mine from high school lived out in the woods in Maine but they had a bike and would bike to the store. They also had a free android based government phone that they used to post on Facebook. They get a certain amount of data per month with those plans too.
And most poor people can get a ride to somewhere with internet and sit all day at McDonald's using wi-fi sipping coffee or eating a $1 ice cream.
My in laws in AR live in a rural area and they have a family dollar "in town" which is about 10 miles from their place. There is also a grocery store, a Sonic, and a McDonalds "in town" that they can easily get to.
Some people work full time and still qualify for food stamps. What about those people?
What about them??
It's good they are getting food stamps, I guess??
In the "rotten" old days, these people would have gotten by with family, church and/or community support. Not rich, to be sure. But they would have gotten by. Today?? The Super State is "supposed" to take care of everything.
In the Great Depression, my town would haul truck loads of logs into town and dump it all on the town green. If you needed wood, go cut some up and take it. Or don't. Whatever.
Can you IMAGINE this current wretched culture we live in today even trying something like now???

The government big enough to give you everything you want, is big enough to take it away.

In the Depression people packed up and moved thousands of miles to get a job. Nowadays too many wont move 25 miles to find employment.
I'm always reminded of the Sam Kinison rant about getting food to people in the desert. He screams move, it's a desert, nothing grows here.

Me, no. The closest is 14.7 miles, but I could not walk 14.7 miles to go to mcdonalds.

So again the original argument was many of these people in Main are rural and thus needing a car in order to find a job. They cant get a job because they cant afford a car. They cant afford a car because they cant get a job.
My argument is yet, they can get to a walmart to buy a phone and data and the library or mcdonalds to get wifi to get on line to fill out an application for food stamps. They can get to the doctor, grocery and every place else they need to go. Makes no sense to me and you still have not explained how they can get all these places yet cant get to a job.

So back in grands day he and ma lived way down in the holler when they first got married because the land was given to them. Times were tough in the Appalachians in 1930 and grandad found work in construction on the POW camp. He lit his coal oil lamb and walked the IDK 7-10 miles out of the holler, hung his lamp on a tree, caught a ride in the back of a truck 25 miles to the job site, worked all day, lit his lamp and walked back to the cabin in the evening.
Later when the coal mines and subsequently railroad went busts he went north to find work and sent money home to ma.
Thats what people did when they didnt have a car because they dont have a job and they dont have a job because they cant afford a car. They didnt sit a McDonalds and use free wifi on an obama phone to apply for food stamps.
If the choice is between opening up my wallet for that vs opening up my wallet to put you in jail @ 20x the cost? How is that a hard decision?
If people would rather resort to crime than to get off their behinds and get a job, then I'd gladly pay 20x more to get them the 3 hots and a cot they feel they deserve without lifting a finger.
You want to open your wallet because slugs will turn to crime rather than exert themselves? Good for you.
