Pence leaked the Flynn story that was originally leaked to him by Yates. Trump never waned to or intended to fire Flynn, but he was put into a corner by the leaks in the press. After it leaked, he had no choice but to accept Flynn's resignation.

So yes, the leaked were real news and target same from the top of the WH.
